2) A bite from a lone star tick can make a person severely allergic to red meat and dairy.

3) Some people are allergic to metals used in surgical implants and tattoo inks.

4) Shaving your cat won’t help with cat allergies 🐈. It’s their dander and saliva that contain allergens.

It’s time to start getting ready for summer camp ☀️! Lexington has many camps with activities that kids will love, including art, theater, archery, horse riding, tennis, golf and more! If your child has allergies, make sure these three items are on your pre-camp checklist to ensure a fun and worry-free camp experience for you and your kids:

1) Describe your child’s allergy and specific symptoms on the camp application form.

2) Check the expiration date of all medications and get new ones if needed.

3) Remind your child to tell an adult immediately if they begin to feel an allergic reaction starting, and always know where the emergency medication is, or which adults have access to it.

Kids can’t wait for the rain to stop so they can get back outside to play! ☀️ But when the rain stops there is still a danger to be alert for. With the record-breaking amounts of rain we have had in Lexington comes an increased risk for exposure to mold. 💦 Damp areas both outside and inside the house can create the perfect environment for mold to grow. Children who are exposed to mold may experience allergic reactions or asthma symptoms ranging from mild to severe 🫢. To help reduce the chances of mold exposure, be aware of the areas outside where your kids might like to play. Avoid damp areas, fallen leaves or yard debris 🍂 and shaded areas that remain wet. Indoors, be sure to keep your bathrooms, kitchen, and laundry area dry and well ventilated.

There is even a form of asthma called cough-variant asthma where the only symptom is a chronic cough! In most cases, over the counter medications won’t help this type of cough.
