3D printing technology in healthcare
Dr. Daniel Hackett has been treating a patient who suffered severe injuries and multiple fractures in his shoulder region following a motorcycle accident. Unfortunately, his fractures were unable to be treated in a timely manner due to other critical injuries he sustained that had to be prioritized. Once he was stabilized, the bones that were fractured in his shoulder had begun to heal with deformities and it was too late to reset them. The deformities caused the patient to have severely reduced mobility in his shoulder joint and chronic pain. Additionally, there were limited surgical options because the standard hardware used for a total shoulder replacement would not fit properly. Luckily, with the help of a 3D printing company, Restor3D, he and his team were able to create a customized shoulder implant that worked with the patient’s altered anatomy. This allowed Dr. Hackett to perform a reverse total shoulder arthroplasty, which will greatly improve this patient’s quality of life by restoring the use of his left arm and relieving his pain.
