UK Sanders-Brown Center on Aging

UK Sanders-Brown Center on Aging The mission of the SBCoA is to enable healthy brain aging for all. The Center is directed by Linda J. Van Eldik, PhD, Professor, Department of Neuroscience.

The Sanders-Brown Center on Aging (SBCoA) was established in 1979, and received funding as one of the original ten National Institutes of Health Alzheimer's Disease Centers. Internationally acclaimed, the SBCoA is recognized for its contributions to the fight against brain diseases that are associated with aging. The SBCoA has more than 100 faculty and staff pursuing basic and clinical research in Alzheimer's disease and related neurodegenerative disorders, stroke, prion disease, and normal brain aging. The Center is a global pioneer in Alzheimer's disease research, with over thirty years of published work and 700 volunteers, some with the disease and some without, who are studied over time and donate their brains when they die. The cutting-edge research focuses on identifying problems as early as possible, before memory loss develops, so that Alzheimer's disease can be prevented or delayed. The ultimate goal of the Center on Aging is to catalyze innovative and outstanding brain research while ensuring a more rapid rate of progress toward new therapies to delay or prevent age-related brain diseases like Alzheimer's disease, so that our human volunteers, patients, and caregivers become the beneficiaries of our advances in knowledge.

Last week several researchers from the ๐“๐ก๐ข๐›๐š๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ญ ๐‹๐š๐› presented during the meeting in New York! Posters presented included:

Deciphering the Role of Astrocytic Insulin Receptor Overexpression on Vascular Dynamics and Gait in an Amyloidosis Model
Validation of Proteins Involved in the Insulin Receptor Beta Subunit Pathway from Astrocyte Enriched Brain Samples of Overexpressed Insulin Mice
2-photon imaging of astrocyte metabolic activity in an awake mouse using the PercevalHR and Peredox nanosensors.

The Thibault Lab primarily studies the effect of aging on astrocytic calcium dysregulation in a mouse model of amyloidosis (5xFAD). New projects currently under development include investigating the impact of overexpressing and knocking out insulin receptors in astrocytes and using metabolic nanosensors to assess astro- and neurovascular coupling in young and aged mice. This week we presented about navigating care in the final stages of dementia and caregiving through the lens of sensation in dementia care during the KY Association of Hospice & Palliative Care. Takeaways:

When a person with dementia becomes agitated, behavioral, environmental, and non-pharmacological approaches should always be tried first.

Almost all of our efforts are palliative by nature as we cannot prevent the progression of any form of dementia.

Lessening the burden of care for caregivers should be a goal of care!

Carers can enrich the environment to provide comfort and support for those living with dementia.

The LiBBY Study is testing THC and CBD in persons who have dementia and experience agitation. We are currently enrolling!

Up to one-third of stroke survivors go on to develop dementia and cognitive impairment. But is it possible to predict, at the time of a stroke, who will have the best cognitive recovery?

Thatโ€™s a question neuropsychologist Dr. Jordan Harp hopes to answer.
