"Normal" pictures were taken, but normal is boring, and people in recovery are the opposite of boring, so it was only natural that Megan requested that we use this one. Congratulations to Megan for graduating the Boyle Co. IOP program! She's also well on her way to becoming another superstar of the Women's Recovery House in Danville!

Last week, the men of the Maxwelton long-term program spent their hard-earned money on toys for kids at Shriners Children's Hospital. Yesterday, they Santa'd up and passed out the presents.

Brothers and sisters, it is time to congratulate these outstanding folks for graduating the Lexington IOP! From left to right:

Dustin - I'm pretty sure I've mentioned the "eye of the tiger" in previous posts--that relentless, unflappable determination to do whatever it takes to live a life of lasting recovery. Dustin has it, for sure. See that hair? It's not just stylish; it's symbolic: he is *amped up* for this thing! Congratulations, Dustin!

Shana - Want to learn something about perseverance? Just hang out with Shana for a while. Addiction is a cunning foe, and one of its favorite tricks is to try to convince us that our battle against it is hopeless. Addiction will tell us that that we're "not worth it"; it will whisper in our ear that we "might as well just give up." Shana refuses to fall for this trick. And because of her strength, she is finally beginning to love herself as much as we all love her--and to believe that she is, in fact, *very much* worth it. Congratulations, Shana!

Emily - She's as clever as they come, and has a talent for wielding her words like weapons: sharp, colorful, wild, and even a little chaos-creating (OK, so maybe *a lot* chaos-creating sometimes). This talent is also a double-edged sword. In addiction, it's a weapon of mass destruction; but in recovery, it's a gift that can uplift, motivate and inspire, guiding others along the path of hope and light. We have no doubt that she will continue doing just that. Congratulations, Emily!

Christine - Did you know there are people out there who burn more energy than a nuclear reactor? They are few and far between, but they exist--and she is definitely one of them. Physical illness? Stress levels that would debilitate most people? Pshaw: nothing can stop the dynamo that is Christine. And the best part? The power she generates comes in the form of selflessness, recovery and love. We can't wait to see what she electrifies and brightens next. Congratulations, Christine!

At the Shepherds House, if you leave a dirty dish in the sink, the accountability comes in the form of a ticket that will cost you a few bucks of your hard-earned money. All the ticket money is pooled together, and it's usually spent on fun monthly group activities for all the residents. But for the holidays, the men of the Maxwelton program used their ticket money to buy toys for the kids at Shriners Children's Hospital. And these being Shepherds House guys, OF COURSE they turned it into a competition between two groups to see who could spend closest to exactly $500 (the winners spent $499.58, edging out the other group by a mere 6 cents).

In addiction, all we do is take. In recovery, we start giving back.

Congratulations to Drake for completing the Shepherds House IOP! Drake is like a high-voltage jump starter: when he walks into a room, he electrifies it with his boundless energy, enthusiasm and passion. In group today, someone observed that in recovery, "God is our sun, and we are His solar panels"; Drake himself is now on the path of recovery, and he's as ready as anyone for this spiritually-charged opportunity. We can't wait to see him brighten the world around him with light, love and hope. Congratulations, Drake!

The Shepherds House is deeply grateful for Frank "Junior" Evans, and anyone who knows Junior today is probably just as grateful for him as we are. We are also deeply grateful for this generous gift from a friend of The House: the financial seed of the Frank "Junior" Evans Scholarship Fund.
