The UK HealthCare Transplant Center this year celebrated 60 years of transplantation. In that time we've performed over 6,000 transplants, a feat that wouldn't be possible without the tireless efforts of so many providers across Kentucky.

Among those are Dr. John Gleason and the care team at the UK Transplant & Specialty Clinic in Louisville. This team specializes in kidney and liver transplants, which are among the most frequently performed transplant surgeries.

We invite you to join us in thanking team members like these. Without them, 6,000 second chances would not have been possible.

Harrison Memorial Hospital has been a longstanding member of the Gill Heart & Vascular Institute Affiliate Network, a statewide collaboration of hospitals committed to delivering the very best in heart and vascular care. Without dedicated heart specialists like this, 6,000 second chances would not be possible.

This year, the Pediatric Forensic Medicine at Golisano Children’s at UK marked its 10th anniversary serving the needs of Kentucky’s children who have experienced abuse and neglect.

“Our program’s growth reflects both a sobering need and a steadfast commitment to Kentucky’s kids.”

What began as a small program has become a critical resource for children across Kentucky.

A family of carolers brought holiday cheer to UK Hospital just days before Christmas, performing festive songs for patients, visitors and staff as part of a month-long series of free concerts.

The pulmonary team at UK St. Claire, which includes Ryane Davis, Dr. Kelli Mathew, Dr. Indu Shivaram and Donna Thomas, aids in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases in the respiratory system. Experts like them are crucial allies when it comes to helping you breathe a little easier.

The playroom in Golisano Children’s at UK is lined with tables, each piled high with toys, games and other goodies that would brighten any child’s holiday. Across the room, there are more tables, stocked with scarves, mugs and cologne — gifts that might seem more suitable for grownups.

That’s exactly who those gifts are for. This is Jarrett’s Holiday Store, and annual event organized by Jarrett’s Joy Cart. In here, pediatric patients can “shop” for gifts for their parents, grandparents and siblings; a team of volunteers helps the patients shop, then they wrap the gifts and deliver them, bagged and tagged, to the patient’s room.

Jarrett died in 2002, but his family keeps his legacy going. Every year, his mother Jennifer, her husband Doug and a team of volunteers set up the holiday store in the playroom with gifts purchased with donated funds. Everything from toys for baby siblings to hats and gloves for grandparents are available for patients to select at no cost. If the patient isn’t well enough to come to the playroom, the volunteers load up a cart and bring the store to them in their hospital room.

While working as a Circuit Clerk for the Clark County Judicial Center in 1992, Andrew Walson founded KY Trust for Life, an organization that supports the education of organ donation. Walson had no idea his own son would end up needing a transplant himself.

The family remains close with the Clark County Judicial Center, whose current staff continue to support the mission of organ donation across Kentucky. Partners like them made 6,000 second chances more achievable.
