Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy (PFPT) is a specialized area of physical therapy that addresses the physical and functional issues that can occur when the pelvic floor muscles are not working properly.
The main goals of PFPT are really the same as any physical therapy - to get the muscles that aren’t turning on to start activating and to get the muscles that are turning on too much to chill out. As muscles start to turn on and off as they should muscle length/flexibility is restored, pain decreases, strength and stability improves, and function returns.
Signs of improperly functioning pelvic floor muscles include, but are not limited to:
✨involuntary leakage of urine or stool
✨heaviness/pressure or “falling out feeling” in the va**na
✨pain with pe*******on (s*x, pelvic exams, or tampon use)
✨difficult emptying the bladder or bowel ✨unidentifiable/unexplained hip, back, or pelvic pain
Don’t put off tomorrow what you can do today.

Diaphragmatic breathing is an important technique to learn because it helps settle down or relax the autonomic nervous system (calming us down from a “flight or fight” response). The correct use of diaphragmatic breathing can help to quiet brain activity resulting in the relaxation of all the muscles and organs of the body. It can also improve the range of motion and flexibility of our pelvic floor muscles, because as our diaphragm contracts and relaxes it loads and unloads the pelvic floor muscles causing it to lengthen and recoil.

Having both a calmed nervous system and a more flexible, relaxed pelvic floor can significantly help with conditions of pelvic floor muscle dysfunction, such as pain, leakage, or difficulty emptying the bladder or bowel.

Now that we’ve talked about what constipation is, we can begin treating it. Colon massage is a self applied technique you can use to help ease gas, bloating and constipation.
