It's HOT!! Take extreme care with your pets in this weather! Remember, an estimated 50% of heat stroke dogs do not survive, even with treatment. Prevention is key!
1. Only go on short walks, and only early morning and late evening, and stay in the shade as much as possible.
2. Even young, healthy dogs can get heat stroke if exercised in the heat, even if they are used to lots of exercise.
3. Signs of heat stress (you may see just one or two of these): excessive panting, hanging head, drooling, slowing down on walks, refusing to walk, red mucus membranes, diarrhea or vomiting, collapse
4. If you think your pet is overheated, move them to a cool area, pour cool (not cold) water on their neck and abdomen (It's a good idea to keep a water bottle with you for this purpose), and get them to the vet immediately. Do NOT put them in ice water.
5. Keep animals inside if possible. If they do not have access to the indoors, they need plenty of water and deep shade.
6. Be aware of hot concrete/cement that can burn foot pads.
7. Do not leave your dog in your car. Just do not do it. We see more deaths from this than anything else.

Let's have a fun and safe summer, everyone!

Lost or Abandoned Dogs Found – Help Needed! 🚨

Two dogs have been found wandering in the cold in a rural area around Mt Sterling, and we’re trying to determine if they are lost or were sadly dumped. These friendly, sweet pups need help finding their way home—or a safe place if no one comes forward.

We do not have the dogs at our clinic, but if you recognize them or have any information, please call or text Heather at 859-749-8147 or Jennifer at 859-300-1628 as soon as possible.

Please share to spread the word. 🐾

This is close! Rabid skunk found in Stillwater/Boston Road/Monticello area. Make sure your pets are up-to-date on their rabies vaccines. If one of your pets comes into contact with a wild animal (including bats), call your veterinarian immediately for a booster vaccine.

Severe winter weather advisory! The predicted combination of very low temperatures, heavy snowfall, and ice makes conditions outside very dangerous. All pets need to be brought indoors for the duration. Also, when you let your pets out to go to the bathroom, make sure to let them back in! With all the chaos of a snowstorm (and possible power outage), it can be surprisingly easy to let a pet out and forget that you didn't let them back in, especially if you have multiple pets. Do a headcount to make sure everyone is safe and sound. Stay safe out there everybody!

Please share. Heat advisory! Temperatures have risen rapidly over the past few days and pets haven't had a good chance to acclimate. Please be extremely careful with pets in this weather. Remember, many dogs don't survive heat stroke, even with aggressive treatment. Young, active, healthy dogs die from this every year. Don't assume your dog is safe because it is healthy and not a high-risk breed. No dog is immune. Prevention is key:

1. NEVER leave your pets in your car, even with the window cracked, even in the shade. If your car is equipped to keep the AC on, still check very frequently to make sure it hasn't turned off. (A police dog died when the car stalled and the AC turned off.)
2. Go for shorter walks, and only very early in the morning or later in the evening.
3. Keep your dogs inside in the AC if possible. If not possible, make sure they have DEEP shade (tree shade, not just the shadow of a building) and lots of water. A small baby pool can be helpful if they need to get in the water to cool off. (Obviously use caution with pools if you have small children.)
4. No "forced" exercise. Dogs will keep exercising if they are excited about something (like chasing squirrels) or if they think you want them to, even if they are past the point of exhaustion. Watch for panting, stumbling, head drooping or other signs of tiredness. Even better, avoid any type of activity in heat of the day.
5. Keep cool water with you. If your dog starts overheating, get him out of the sun, pour water on him (make sure it is an area where it can get to the skin), and get him to a veterinarian immediately. If he is conscious, offer him water, but don't force him to drink it.
6. Your dog can severely burn its pads on hot concrete/asphalt. Be careful where you are walking on these hot days. Stay in the grass or shade.
7. If you have a brachiocephalic (short-nosed) dog (pug, bulldog, French bull dog, etc), an older dog, or a dog with medical problems, they are at increased risk, but ALL dogs are at risk.

Have a fun and safe summer, everyone!

No matter how much we wish them to live forever, most of us have lost a beloved pet best friend. For World Pet Memorial Day, we’d love to see a picture of who you’d like to meet someday at the rainbow bridge. ❤️
