Please share. Heat advisory! Temperatures have risen rapidly over the past few days and pets haven't had a good chance to acclimate. Please be extremely careful with pets in this weather. Remember, many dogs don't survive heat stroke, even with aggressive treatment. Young, active, healthy dogs die from this every year. Don't assume your dog is safe because it is healthy and not a high-risk breed. No dog is immune. Prevention is key:
1. NEVER leave your pets in your car, even with the window cracked, even in the shade. If your car is equipped to keep the AC on, still check very frequently to make sure it hasn't turned off. (A police dog died when the car stalled and the AC turned off.)
2. Go for shorter walks, and only very early in the morning or later in the evening.
3. Keep your dogs inside in the AC if possible. If not possible, make sure they have DEEP shade (tree shade, not just the shadow of a building) and lots of water. A small baby pool can be helpful if they need to get in the water to cool off. (Obviously use caution with pools if you have small children.)
4. No "forced" exercise. Dogs will keep exercising if they are excited about something (like chasing squirrels) or if they think you want them to, even if they are past the point of exhaustion. Watch for panting, stumbling, head drooping or other signs of tiredness. Even better, avoid any type of activity in heat of the day.
5. Keep cool water with you. If your dog starts overheating, get him out of the sun, pour water on him (make sure it is an area where it can get to the skin), and get him to a veterinarian immediately. If he is conscious, offer him water, but don't force him to drink it.
6. Your dog can severely burn its pads on hot concrete/asphalt. Be careful where you are walking on these hot days. Stay in the grass or shade.
7. If you have a brachiocephalic (short-nosed) dog (pug, bulldog, French bull dog, etc), an older dog, or a dog with medical problems, they are at increased risk, but ALL dogs are at risk.
Have a fun and safe summer, everyone!
