Moe Shamell: As for the headlines today. It's confusing, I get it. I will try and break it down here. There is a Winter Storm Warning for the northern 1/3 of West Tennessee or, about I-40 points north. Confidence there is high enough there will be at least 4 inches of snow within 12 hours in NW Tennessee. South of I-40 it's likely that sleet will get involved that will cut into the overall snowfall totals lowering confidence of hitting a 4 inch threshold south of I-40. I is more likely we'll need a Winter Weather Advisory. Having said that, there will still be impacts from 2 inches of snow and 0.10-0.2" of ice. The impacts will be the same, iced over roads, significant travel/slowed traffic issues regardless of meeting the specific criteria.

Dr. Gilliam is now certified to insert Eversense devices! These continuous glucose monitors are inserted under the skin and stay in place for up to a year. While in place, these will allow you to see without sticking your finger multiple times daily how different food choices and activities affect your sugar levels. If you’re prone to lows, this can let you know that your glucose is dropping quickly and allow you to act before symptoms develop. Unlike other CGMs that can be knocked off easily, ruining the sensor, these stay in place. There’s a small transmitter that sits over the top of the device that can be removed to shower or swim or when you just don’t want it to be seen. If it’s bumped and knocked off, you can put it back on! It’s easy to insert in the office under local anesthesia and takes less than 15 minutes to insert. The device may cost you as little as $99. Insertion and monitoring are included for our membership patients and we do offer insurance billing for patients with traditional Medicare. We are also available to place these for patients who are not usual patients in our practice with a referral from your primary care doctor for a one time cash fee. At present, Dr. Gilliam is the only physician between Memphis and Nashville who is certified to place these devices and our next scheduled placement day is October 11. Not January, now! We think of January as being the time of new beginnings because of a new year but September is the real beginning of change for many things. Trees begin their process of transformation into their winter slumber, kids start to school with an array of excitement over friends, new adventures and fresh array of school supplies. And studies show in fall we also when we experience our greatest weight gain. Why not January? The bitter cold and dark days of Winter are hard to overcome when you're trying to find motivation. And the fall weight is just extra pounds to lose. So, not January, now!!
