Last Saturday we celebrated the Fall Harvest Festival of Light at Morningside Urban Farm! This special event marked the end of the growing season and was a great way for our community to come together to reflect and connect.

Guests took part in creative activities and performances centered around light as a symbol of hope and healing. The event also featured the Burden Boat ceremony, an interactive art piece by Kurt Steger that focused on release and renewal.

Smoked for years? 🚬 It’s time to check in on your lungs. Lung cancer often shows no symptoms until it’s advanced, but a simple low-dose CT scan can catch it early, when it’s most treatable. Call 540-224-4649 to schedule an appointment for Saturday, Nov. 8 during our lung cancer screening event.

$105 million raised for our community’s cancer center: done ✅. Next: bring proton therapy to Southwest Virginia.

Your generosity helped us reach our first milestone. Now we’re expanding our mission to bring proton therapy—one of the most advanced cancer treatments in the world—to patients here at home. Proton therapy delivers precise radiation while minimizing exposure to healthy tissue, offering life-changing benefits, especially for children and those with complex cancers.

A $17.5 million gift from Nick and Jenny Taubman, plus a $2.5 million anonymous gift, have already raised $20 million toward a $50 million initiative to bring this technology to Roanoke.

This is a turning point for cancer care in our region — and we need you with us.

Abhishek Reddy, MD, a child and adolescent psychiatrist in our Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine, conducted a study in adolescents aimed at evaluating the timing of intentional overdose attempts and whether they occurred in the context of recent screen use, as well as whether over-the-counter or prescription medications were used.

A heartbreaking and important story by Meg Oliver on CBS News last night highlighting a study by Abhishek Reddy and Timothy Ferrebee. The study examined data of children ages 12 to 17 who had been admitted to a hospital after attempting su***de by intentionally overdosing. It found that about two-thirds of those overdosed after 8 p.m., and approximately three out of four were on screens right before.

"It is very distracting and disturbs your sleep," Dr. Abhishek Reddy, an associate professor at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and psychiatrist Carilion Clinic conducted the research, said of screen use before bed."
