I’ve seen a lot on the internet in the past couple of years about how to regulate your nervous system, and while I’m glad we’re shifting our focus to the body, a lot of these messages are lacking the nuance they need so that people can really understand what is happening for them internally.

We don’t arrive at a state of all the way healed. We won’t wake up one day and never experience activation again. We won’t suddenly feel regulated all of the time.

When we talk about nervous system healing, we’re talking about the importance of learning your cues and listening to your body. We’re talking about slowing down as opposed to being quick to responsiveness. We’re talking about being with yourself rather than judging yourself.

Healing happens in all of the moments where we can notice our activation or trigger, get in contact with ourselves, and gently guide ourselves back to a regulated baseline.

It’s all about returning home, again and again.

To those of you learning to treat your body with love and care, I see you.

(IC: Healing doesn’t mean you never get triggered- it means you respond differently when you do)

Really wonderful people here! 🙏

It’s okay to love Jesus and need a therapist too!

We say that a lot around here—because sometimes what holds people back from reaching out for help isn’t the stigma around therapy, it’s the fear that maybe needing help means they aren’t trusting God enough.

But hear this: You can have faith and still struggle. You can believe in prayer and still need someone to talk to.

At Montooth Counseling, we’re a place where your faith is honored, your story is safe, and your healing matters.

We serve Christian clients and non-Christian clients alike—everyone is welcome here. But many of our therapists have specialized training and experience in working with Christian clients, helping them navigate the unique ways faith and mental health intertwine.

Our team is grounded in evidence-based practices like Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), EMDR and ART for Trauma Treatment, IFS, ERP (Exposure and Response Prevention for OCD) and more. And for those who want it, we know how to weave faith and therapy together—with gentleness, wisdom, and respect for your journey.

Because sometimes what you need is a counselor who understands what it feels like to sit in a pew every Sunday, to wrestle with scripture when life feels heavy, or to wonder where God is in the middle of the pain.

Our founder, Kurt Montooth, spent 15 years in ministry. He’s walked with people through grief, burnout, marriage struggles, and all the messy, beautiful in-betweens of life. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Biblical Studies, has advanced training in EFT and Created for Connection, and still shares messages in churches on marriage and relationships.

Many of our clinicians earned their degrees at Campbellsville University and Asbury Seminary, learning how to hold both clinical excellence and faith in the same hand.

So if you’ve ever felt like you needed someone who could hold space for both your heart and your faith, we’re here.

It’s okay to love Jesus and need a therapist too!

We are all familiar with the striking images of brain scans that illustrate the devastating effects of prolonged substance use. These visuals serve as a stark warning, akin to the memorable message, “This is your brain…this is your brain on drugs…any questions?” However, I take this dialogue further by presenting a broader narrative about mental health. At times when facilitating IOP group therapy, I show my clients various brain scans that reveal the impact of addiction, but I also juxtapose these with an image that often provokes a strong response: the brain of a young orphan who has experienced neglect, trauma, and the absence of safe attachments.

When I pose the question of which substance this brain may be addicted to, clients often speculate wildly, naming common drugs. The revelation that this brain belongs not to a substance user but to a child deprived of essential emotional connections underscores a critical point: trauma, anxiety, depression, and other mental health conditions can exert a toll on the brain comparable to that of substance use.

My practice is centered around a comprehensive understanding of mental health. I recognize that conditions such as trauma and anxiety can lead to neurotransmitter imbalances, structural changes in the brain, impaired cognitive functioning, and difficulties in emotional regulation. These challenges can increase the risk of co-occurring substance use disorders, creating a complex interplay that many individuals face.

With this knowledge, I am committed to treating mental health in its entirety. My approach integrates compassionate support with evidence-based interventions designed to address both the psychological and physiological aspects of mental health. I aim to provide clients with the tools and insights necessary for healing.

If you or someone you know is seeking a dedicated partner on the journey toward mental wellness, I invite you to reach out. Together, we can unravel the complexities of your experiences and embark on a transformative path toward recovery, resilience, and a brighter future.

"The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams." - Eleanor Roosevelt

The future is a canvas painted by those who dare to envision the splendor of their dreams. It is through believing in the beauty of these aspirations that we cultivate the potential for transformation and growth.

“The darkest nights produce the brightest stars.”— John Green

In the depths of our most challenging moments, when darkness seems to envelop us, it is often within that profound obscurity that we discover the brightest stars of our existence. Each struggle, each trial, serves as a catalyst for growth and transformation, illuminating the path toward healing and resilience. Just as the night sky reveals its celestial wonders only in the absence of light, so too do our inner strengths and potential emerge through adversity. Let us embrace these moments, for they guide us toward the brilliance that lies within.
