Davidson Funeral Home has a long and colorful history of providing funeral service in Lexington and Davidson County. We trace our roots to John McCrary who came to Lexington in 1865 as a cabinet maker and sold coffins in his furniture store. Kirkman, Sr. began working for Mr. McCrary and in 1910 Mr. Kirkman graduated from Cincinnati College of Embalming and returned to Lexington as the first licen

sed embalmer in town. Over the next several decades Mr. Kirkman operated as McCrary Furniture & Embalmers, Kirkman & Penniger, Lexington Funeral Directors, Kirkman & Son, and in 1940 incorporated as Davidson Funeral Home, Inc. had two sons who followed him in the funeral business. Victor Kirkman and R. Kirkman, Jr. The assumed control of Davidson in 1948 and owned and operated the business until 1989 when they sold the business to Jack & Joan Briggs who have owned and operated Briggs Funeral Home in a neighboring town since 1970, and to Larry Morrison who had been employed with Davidson since 1983. Victor Kirkman died at the age of 88 in 2001 and R. died at the age of 87 in 2005. They both remained licensed by the state board of funeral service until their death and as long as health permitted they continued to work visitations and funerals spanning a period of almost 100 years of the Kirkman Family’s involvement in funeral service in Davidson County. Today, Dan Briggs serves as President of the company, Joan Briggs is Vice President, Jack Briggs is Secretary and Matthew Jernigan is Treasurer. We love and miss former owner Larry Morrison who passed away in 2020.

Honoring the Legacy, Embracing the Future

In this short video, meet Dan Briggs and Matthew Jernigan—now leading Davidson Funeral Home with deep roots and a shared purpose. Dan is the son of Jack Briggs, and Matthew is the grandson of Larry Morrison. Both were raised right here in this community and in the halls of this funeral home.

They now carry on the legacy of those who came before them, while also forging a future focused on compassionate service, meaningful innovation, and a continued commitment to the families we are honored to serve.

This is more than a business—it’s a calling, built on generations of trust.

🇺🇸 Honoring the Brave This Independence Day 🇺🇸

As we celebrate the birth of our nation, we pause to honor the men and women—past and present—who have protected our freedom through their service and sacrifice.

At Davidson Funeral Home, we are thankful to live in a country where liberty is valued. We quietly give thanks to God for the freedoms we enjoy and the opportunity to serve families in their time of need.

Wishing you and your loved ones a safe and happy Fourth of July.

We are excited to share that our Hickory Tree location has undergone renovations to better serve the Northern Davidson County and Winston-Salem communities. Our goal has always been to provide a space that feels warm, welcoming, and truly like home. Because to us, a funeral home should be more than just a building—it should be a place of comfort, care, and support for every family who walks through our doors. We look forward to continuing to serve you with the same compassion and dedication that has been our foundation since 1865.

Looks matter, especially if it's the last place you will be seen during your earthly presence.
