Huge thanks to Academy of Doctors of Audiology and Doctors for Responsible Gun Ownership for their testimony at last week’s hearing on Virginia HB 207, where lawmakers tabled legislation imposing a draconian $500 suppressor tax on Virginia gun owners.

Suppressors help prevent permanent hearing damage and reduce the risk of costly medical treatment later in life. Health experts agree: These hearing protection devices should be accessible to all law-abiding gun owners.

Audiology is at a pivotal crossroads. While education and clinical training for audiologists have continued to advance, many state audiology practice acts have not kept pace, creating growing challenges for patient access, professional parity, and the long-term viability of the profession.

This webinar, presented by the Academy of Doctors of Audiology (ADA), will bring together leading voices in audiology advocacy and practice to examine the urgent need for state audiology practice act modernization. Panelists will explore how outdated statutory and regulatory language undermines the ability of audiology programs to attract students, threatens patient access to care, and places the profession at a disadvantage relative to other clinical doctoral professions in terms of reimbursement and autonomy.

Today, the US Department of Education (DOE) released the proposed rule that will define student loan threshold borrowing amounts based on the type of program in which the student is enrolled. Under the DOE proposal, “professional students” will be those enrolled in one of 11 designated professional degree programs: pharmacy, dentistry, veterinary medicine, chiropractic, law, medicine, optometry, osteopathic medicine, podiatry, theology and clinical psychology. Students enrolled in these programs would qualify for up to $50,000 in federal loans per year, with a $200,000 aggregate limit, while "graduate" students would be eligible for up to $20,500 in federal student loans per year, with a $100,000 aggregate limit. If finalized, these changes will take effect July 1, 2026.

Importantly, AUDIOLOGY is NOT listed among the professional degree programs (it has never been listed as a professional program, despite some misinformation that exists and persists).

ADA is advocating tirelessly to ensure that audiology is added to the list of professional degree programs. BUT, as important as it is to petition the DOE and to petition members of Congress to expand the definition of professional degrees, it is equally and maybe even more important to modernize state audiology practice to reflect the education, training, and qualifications of audiologists as clinical doctoring professionals, who evaluate, diagnose, manage, and treat auditory and vestibular disorders. View ADA's Audiology 2050 initiative here:https://www.audiologist.org/_resources/documents/advocacy/audiology-2050/Audiology-2050-Brochure.pdf

ADA is still reviewing the proposal in its entirety and will be sending members additional informaition and resources very soon. In the meantime, please read the DOE proposal here:

ADA

Background The Academy of Doctors of Audiology (ADA) was founded by nine practitioners in 1977, as the Academy of Dispensing Audiologists, to foster and support the professional dispensing of hearing aids by qualified audiologists in rehabilitative practices. Later, in 1988, ADA developed the concept of the Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) degree and provided much of the energy behind the movement for the transition of audiology to a doctoring healthcare profession. This goal, as well, has been largely met, as the Au.D. is now the minimum degree for audiology practice offered by educational institutions in the United States. In recognition of these important accomplishments, ADA Fellow members voted for an organizational name change to the Academy of Doctors of Audiology in 2006.

Today, ADA offers programming and support to those audiologists and students who are or who desire to be autonomous practitioners in whatever setting they choose to practice. In particular, ADA's mission emphasizes practice ownership. ADA is focused on helping audiologists succeed in all aspects of practice, with a particular emphasis on the business of audiology.

Audiology Practices, ADA's quarterly magazine, features articles that focus on issues confronting audiologists in autonomous practice. And, true to its mission, ADA continues to advocate for audiologists owning their profession through practice ownership, by offering mentoring assistance to ADA members, potential members and audiology students.
