Up to one-third of stroke survivors go on to develop dementia and cognitive impairment. But is it possible to predict, at the time of a stroke, who will have the best cognitive recovery?

That’s a question neuropsychologist Dr. Jordan Harp hopes to answer.

UK researchers are studying stroke-related brain changes to better predict who is at risk for dementia and aim to improve recovery, especially for patients in rural and Appalachian areas.

As athletes transition back into training, it’s important to prioritize a safe and effective return. Athletic Trainer Ariana Daniel offers this guidance:

"Coming back after summer isn’t about being perfect—it’s about showing up, working smart, and rebuilding the habits that lead to greatness one day at a time. The foundation of a strong season is laid in how you return: with discipline, patience, and purpose. The smartest athletes don’t try to pick up where they left off—they build back gradually, stay consistent, and focus on injury prevention. The goal isn’t just to play—it’s to stay in the game all season long."

Whether you’re a student-athlete or coach, remember: preparation, consistency, and recovery are key to long-term performance and injury prevention.

As another high school football season kicks off across Kentucky, we're looking back at the story of Walker Johnson — a standout offensive lineman from Frederick Douglass High School who exemplified resilience and determination in 2022.

After unknowingly playing through a fractured scaphoid bone in his wrist, Walker received expert care from Dr. Maureen O’Shaughnessy at the UK HealthCare Hand Center. Thanks to a successful surgery and a disciplined recovery, he returned to lead his team through a championship season — without missing a single game his senior year.

Stories like Walker’s continue to remind us why specialized orthopaedic care matters.
