"Falk, consistent with what we have said, indicates that personal values influence sense of self and guide choices. She goes on to say that sense of self is malleable and not only choices influence this, but so do short term contextual factors. Falk also notes the importance of messaging that matches our self. While that is not surprising, it does suggest that things like our reflective listening could be more finely tuned to help light up those parts of our brain. Let me give you an example.

Earlier I told you some of my values, and particularly how I enjoyed
reading books. A general reflection would be:

'Finding a new book is exciting to you. It opens new worlds.'

This is a fine reflection, and Falk might suggest we light up that self-relevance system by being more specific:

'This book challenges you by tapping that part of you which wants to learn and grow.'

The specificity of that second reflection, linked to a core sense of self, increases the self-relevance."

There are places I’ll remember
all my life, though some have changed.
Some forever, not for better;
Some have gone and some remain.
—The Beatles, In My Life (1965)

Like many people, as the holidays approach, I tend to the nostalgic. No surprise then this song has been on my mind. It prompted me to realize that we rarely experience this season only in the present. Instead, we live in the promise of what’s to come and the memories of what has been. Our holidays are shaped by the places and people we remember—some forever, some not for better, some gone, and some still with us.

These memories bring both warmth and pain. It’s easy to become nostalgic, like Clark Griswold in National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, longing for a “Good Old-Fashioned Christmas.” But nostalgia, as Brené Brown notes, is a bittersweet longing for the past. It can comfort us, but it can also keep us from growing and living in the present. Clark discovered that belatedly. The real gift is to remember AND reflect on the past, learn from it, and move forward.

As we celebrate, let’s remember the past—the joyful and the difficult, the people we loved and their full humanity, knowing these experiences mattered and shaped who we are. By acknowledging the full picture, we can bring more joy, light, and connection to this season. May your holidays be rich with full memories, bright with new moments, and peaceful throughout.

For decades, media outlets have commonly reported that low-level drinking can be beneficial. But in the last few years there have been a lot of headlines suggesting there is no “safe” amount of drinking.

What does the best evidence tell us? Do the low-risk guidelines on alcohol need to be lowered?

Explore these questions with Mark Nason tomorrow!

As Derek says, the Prime For Life story matters. How we deliver it - with kindness, care, and fidelity - matters too! Thank you to the Prime For Life instructors who share kind words and an effective program to help others day in and day out!

A kind word really can warm up a winter day. And even in Georgia where a few members of the PRI team are, it's feeling pretty chilly! What's the weather like where you are today?!

Grab an afternoon cup of coffee and join us for another engaging "Dialogue with Derek" featuring Ray Daugherty, co-founder of PRI and primary creator of Prime For Life.

We will dig into what it took to develop a whole new approach to prevention education at a time when zero programs had succeeded in changing behavior, when most programs were not truly research-based, and when most people in the addictions field did not believe either alcohol or biology played a role in developing alcohol addiction! What did it take to see through the haze of beliefs and develop a program that worked?

As we close out this year, Ray will also reveal his thoughts on the most relevant recent research and speculate on what might be the most fertile areas of research moving forward. Whether you're a longtime supporter or new to Prime For Life, this session offers a unique opportunity to hear directly from the visionary behind this transformative program and ask the questions you have on your mind.

There seems to have emerged a common view that THC is a useful treatment for several mental health problems, but the information is often anecdotal. So let's take a deeper dive!

This session, led by Allan Barger, will review some currently published research on using cannabis, including THC and CBD, to treat four conditions: depression, anxiety, PTSD, and psychosis disorders.
