LEXINGTON'S CANNABIS DISPENSARY
With Lexington's first dispensary set to open January 15th, I want to remind people of a few things before they shop:
1. Do your homework in advance. Using cannabis as medicine when purchasing from a retail store means that you are in charge of finding a product and dose that is best for you. Budtenders are not medical professionals. Have the mindset that to find the right medication(s) for your body, it is likely going to take time, patience, knowledge, and money.
2. If using a cannabis product that has the potential to make you "high" be sure to start low and then increase slowly to find what works for you. Most of my patients have never used cannabis so I start them with THC 1.0mg/dose when using edibles or tinctures. Topical products intended to have only a local effect do not make you "high."
3. If a beginner, stay away from concentrates. If you don't know how to buy/use "flower" (there is a lot to it) then don't buy any. It is illegal in Kentucky to smoke ma*****na even if you are using it for a medical condition.
4. On your drive home from a dispensary, keep the products in their original closed containers.

CANNABIS 101 "BUDTENDER"
1. A budtender is an employee of a cannabis dispensary who helps shoppers select products. A "bud" is a cannabis flower.
2. Budtenders are not medical professionals. You can tell them "I want something for pain" but they will not know about your specific condition, your other medical diagnoses, your medications, or other important information. Unless mandated by law, dispensaries do not typically have a pharmacist on site though you could always ask.
3. Feel free to ask your budtender what level of training or experience they have. For example, some may have taken classes online to become a "certified" budtender. Others may just have years of experience with cannabis because they have been regular consumers of cannabis. Some could have no formal training or much experience at all.
4. Budtenders are there to sell the products that their dispensary sells. They might offer a product that is not necessarily a good choice for you personally. Feel free to decline their suggestions.
5. Budtenders may have a tip jar so you can give them money if they did a really good job helping you. Consider tipping 10-20% of your bill, similar to how you tip in a restaurant. Do not feel obliged to tip.

Here is a blog article addressing the top 5 questions people ask budtenders. I want to point out that their response about dosing edibles is NOT the advice I give my patients.
