UK HARM REDUCTION HUB ADULTERANT ALERT
Adulterants found in syringes tested in Fayette County
The UK Harm Reduction Hub is issuing an alert that the following adulterants were found in the first large batch of syringes tested from Fayette County:
• BTMPS, a plasticizer, is a chemical used in the production of plastics to protect them from UV rays. Its effects on humans have not been extensively studied, though it is associated with severe health outcomes in animals,
• Carfentanil, an extremely potent fentanyl analogue that is not always detected by fentanyl test strips,
• Medetomidine, a veterinary tranquilizer associated with severe withdrawal symptoms that often require medical attention, and
• Xylazine, a veterinary tranquilizer associated with severe skin wounds that can become necrotic if left untreated.
Please note that because this is the first large batch of syringes tested in Fayette County, we are not able to report on trends over time.
While BTMPS, medetomidine, and xylazine are not opioids, they are often mixed with fentanyl, and carfentanil is an opioid. It is important to carry naloxone and use it if you think someone may be experiencing overdose, and to know how to practice rescue breathing. If you or someone else are experiencing abnormal symptoms such as a very rapid heart beat, extreme mood swings, or wounds that are getting bigger or have a foul odor after using substances, it is important to seek medical care if you are able.
