Say hello to the little friend that I made along a lake trail! Friends are important when it comes to fighting off the winter blues. I once attended a lecture by a local psychiatrist who had previously practiced in the western sunny states. He noted that when he moved his practice to the Midwest, he saw significant differences in the levels of seasonal depression in his patients. His advice? Midwesterners MUST be intentional about social engagement to offset the impact of reduced sunlight in the winter. Taking a winter walk with a friend is a great way to leverage the mood-boosting effects of social contact, movement, sunlight, Vitamin D, and nature exposure into one activity. This “high yield intervention” for mental health can have a big impact! Who are your best pals for walking and talking? ❄️🧣🥾🧤

Thankful for my walking partners today for bringing keen awareness to the various ice formations on the lake—from multiple layers under the water surface to ice-wrapped tree trunks. I enjoyed their noticing skills! We also enjoyed listening for unidentified forest sounds, as well as receiving New Year’s well wishes and a snazzy bike horn salute from a friendly cyclist. Very effective mood lift for post-holiday energy slumps!

Sun exposure and movement are not the only tools in the kit for coping with Seasonal Affective Disorder. Nutritional support can also improve mood—see the link below to advice from Dr. Uma Naidoo, a Harvard trained Nutritional Psychiatrist who heads the Nutritional and Lifestyle Psychiatry Program at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Med. I have read Dr. Naidoo’s book This is Your Brain on Food and listened to some of her training and talks. She offers very practical advice on how to eat to support mental health. Enjoy!

Adopting a healthier diet might help lift your spirits if you're suffering from a bout of a type of depression called seasonal affective disorder, aptly abbreviated as SAD.Many people find themselves fee...

When I’m on the trails and I notice a fishing boat on a quiet lake, I always take a moment to fix my gaze upon the scene. I imagine the peace that the fisherman is feeling, and I channel a bit of that serenity into my own soul. What sights, sounds, and scenery help you connect with a peaceful state?
