The Mercedarian Missionaries of Berriz is a religious community of women with papal approbation. It was founded in 1926 when a Spanish nun, Mother Margarita Maturana, formed the community from a cloistered monastery of the Order of Mercy in Berriz, Spain. Keeping its spiritual ties with the Mercedarians, the congregation of Berriz applies the traditional Mercedarian vocation of the ransom of captives to the active tasks of evangelization and missionary outreach.

On June 23, 1944, an American shell hit and wounded Sister Angelica, one of the Mercedarian Missionary Sisters on Saipan. Sister Genevieve was thought to be sleeping, but was later found to be dead. Evicted from their convent, forced to march from one site to another, the remaining seven Sisters, two priests, and one brother found refuge with a Saipanese family in some caves upon a hill until July 8, the day on which the American conquest of Saipan was completed.
It was Father Tighe's men who gathered and brought up rocks from the bottom of a hill to make a rock grave for Sister Genevieve on the site of her death. They fashioned a simple wooden cross with her name upon it. When the work was done, 50 men celebrated Mass with Father Tighe by the grave of a woman he considered a martyr and a saint.

The motherhouse of the Mercidarian Missionaries of Berriz in Spain. When World War II ended in 1945, two months after Father Tighe made his promise, the Sisters at the motherhouse became very excited. Saipan had come under the control of the US Navy Department. English would now be the official language spoken on the islands. The Mecedarians needed a house in the US where the Sisters could study English and where, in time, American girls would join them to continue their missionary work on the islands of the Pacific. Chaplain Arthur Tighe had promised them such a home; there was no doubt in their minds that he would fulfill that promise!

The mission of the Mercedarian Missionaries of Berriz in Kansas City started in 1945 in Saipan.
"Will you promise us in the name of the Sacred Heart that when you return to the United States, you will establish a house where we can train our Sisters under American auspices to come to these missions on the islands?"
"Sure, Sister," said Father Arthur Tighe. He opened the dictionary and wrote out a solemn pledge, but with one verbal condition attached. He would keep his promise only if he and his men were home by Christmas.

MAY 16 — SATURDAY DEVOTION TO THE IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY

Every Saturday, the Church lovingly dedicates a special devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary — the pure and faithful heart of our Blessed Mother who loved God with complete trust and unwavering obedience. Her heart was never centered on herself, but always on the will of the Lord. From the moment she said her humble “yes” to the angel Gabriel, Mary offered her whole life to God’s plan, even when it led her through sorrow, sacrifice, and suffering. She carried Jesus in her womb with love, followed Him throughout His earthly ministry with quiet faith, and remained standing at the foot of the Cross while witnessing the suffering and death of her Son.

The Immaculate Heart of Mary is a heart filled with compassion, purity, humility, patience, and maternal love. It is a heart that understands human pain, loneliness, fear, and grief because Mary herself experienced them. Yet despite every sorrow she endured, she never lost faith in God’s promises. She teaches us how to trust the Lord even when life becomes difficult, uncertain, or painful. In honoring her Immaculate Heart, we are reminded to open our own hearts to God, to turn away from sin, and to grow in holiness through prayer and obedience.

This devotion also calls us to pray the Holy Rosary faithfully, to offer sacrifices for sinners, and to seek peace through Christ. Our Lady continually points us not to herself, but to Jesus. She desires that every soul return to Him, receive His mercy, and remain close to His Sacred Heart. Through her loving intercession, many wounded hearts find comfort, strength, and hope.

Today, let us entrust to the Immaculate Heart of Mary our families, our fears, our dreams, our struggles, and the burdens we carry silently within us. May she wrap us in her motherly care, guide us away from darkness, and lead us closer to her Son each day. In a world filled with confusion and unrest, the gentle heart of Mary remains a refuge for all who seek peace, healing, and grace.

Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us and lead us always to Jesus. 🙏🏻🤍

Our Gardening Club had a wonderful day in the sunshine! We spent the afternoon watering our beautiful flower garden — it’s thriving more every day! Then we planted fresh tomato plants and gave them a good watering to help them grow strong. Our residents always enjoy getting their hands in the dirt and watching their hard work bloom!
