Cataracts - Lets talk about them. Are you going to get them?

We certainly hope so! The alternative is not... enticing. Cataracts are a normal part of the aging process. This doesn't keep them from being annoying, though.

As we age, cellular waste and UV damage accumulate, causing the lens to darken and cloud. This disrupts focusing of light, and as the condition worsens will eventually prevent a patient from seeing 20/20 even with glasses or contact lenses.

Never fear though. Cataract surgery is one of the safest procedures around, and restores functional vision to about 3 million Americans every year.

This is what we're trying to prevent when your optometrist talks about those hot compresses! 🤢

All that white expressed material is hardened oil, which should come out clear when secreted. Without a healthy oil layer, our tears evaporate too quickly, which is the number one cause of dry eye in across the world...

With this quick reset and regular heat at home we'll have these oil glands whipped into shape fast! 💦💦💦

Oh and for those popaholics out there, we don't recommend you do this at home. 😉

If you were wondering where Dr. Wegener was earlier this week…

Just out advocating for our most precious sense to our elected representatives in DC!

The MOA leadership and UMSL College of Optometry alumni spent the day on Capitol Hill lobbying Congressional Leaders for eyecare needs. Pictured from left to right is Dr. Alan Wegener (Class of 2012), Dr. Shelby Baugh Bruner (Class of 2017), Dr. Jennifer Howard (Class of 2008), Dr. Alyssa Foster (Class of 2017), Dr. Angel Simmons (Class of 2003), Dr. Lee Ann Barrett, Executive Director of the MOA (Class of 1985) and Dr. Tom Cullinane (Class of 1996). Thank you to our alumni for advocating better eyecare for all of us.

We've been looking forward to this year's Crawl since the morning after the first event in 2024. It was a no-brainer to sponsor the inaugural, and we are excited to continue doing so!

Come to the crawl, catch up with old classmates! Have a few drinks and enjoy the fellowship!

It’s hard to believe next Friday we will host the best party on The Hill! 🎉 🎉🎉

The Cardinal Crawl would not be possible without the support of our sponsors. We want to give a special shout out 📣to Hilltop Eye Center for joining the Cardinal Crawl for the second year in a row!

Join the fun! Become a sponsor or purchase a ticket: https://onecau.se/cardinalcrawl

We often counsel young families the best tactics to reduce the chances their children develop myopia. With increasing demand from both schools and social circles, near screen use can spiral quickly.

Take intentional steps now to build healthy habits as your children grow. For those of us that still, despite our best efforts, end up nearsighted, we'll talk myopia control at your next appointment!

TUESDAY, Feb. 25, 2025 (HealthDay News) -- Each hour a person spends squinting into a smartphone or staring at a screen increases their risk of nearsightedness,

Re: Wyandotte County, KS, Tuberculosis outbreak.

While treatable with antibiotics, tuberculosis outbreaks can be difficult to control due to latent tuberculosis, where the individual is contagious but feels no symptoms of the disease.
Transmission person to person involves exposure to water droplets from a cough, sneeze, speaking, or singing. Tuberculosis is carried by a number of species of livestock popular in the Midwest, and can be transmitted by flies, mosquitos, or consuming improperly prepared food products like raw milk.

See CDC article for more information.

Tuberculosis germs spread through the air from one person to another.
