Comprehensive eye care and surgery for Kaua’i The Eye Care Center of Kauai, in Lihue, Hawaii, was founded by Dr. Timothy Lee and Dr. Layne Hashimoto in 2007.

The practice is dedicated to serving families in the community, so it welcomes patients of all ages and the staff includes doctors who specialize in the unique eye care needs of everyone from our youngest patients to our respected older patients. For those who engage in sports, the Eye Care Center of Kauai offers sports vision services, as well as expert pterygium surgery to treat surfer’s eye, which can develop in anyone who spends a lot of time enjoying the beaches of Hawaii. The doctors at the Eye Care Center of Kauai specialize in the medical and surgical management of refractive errors and eye diseases. The team offers expertise in the most advanced procedures, including laser surgery. We look forward to working with our patients for the long term, as we help them manage eye diseases such as cataracts, diabetic eye disease, glaucoma, macular degeneration, ocular misalignment, and dry eye. The services offered at the Eye Care Center of Kauai are rounded out by a selection of cosmetic procedures, including tattoo removal, Botox and Latisse.

Congratulations to our beloved and highly esteemed “CataractCoach” Dr. Uday Devgan, winner of the annual Philip M. Corboy MD Memorial Award, at the Hawaiian Eye 2025 Meeting held at the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa in Poipu.

Dr. Jean Shein and myself, along with several of our technical staff at the Eye Care Center of Kauai, have been attending lectures, workshops and exhibits to learn all the latest advances and innovations in ophthalmology, to better serve our patients and island community.

Dr. Jean Shein has returned to Kauai after spending two weeks in West Africa. Accompanied by her eldest daughter, Dr. Shein served as the Team Lead for SEE International’s latest expedition to Ghana.

Ghana’s population is roughly 30 million and there are fewer than 150 ophthalmologists in the country. Much of the population must prioritize basic needs like food and clean water, so access to medical care and eye surgery is a relative luxury.

To help restore vision in those legally blind, Dr. Shein volunteered her services in collaboration with Dr. Thomas Baah at the Save the Nation’s Sight clinic in Accra. Working alongside Dr. Baah’s outstanding and capable team, over 350 Ghanaian patients were screened and 48 surgeries were performed.

It was a phenomenally rewarding experience for Dr. Shein and her daughter to serve the beautiful and vibrant community of Accra and its surrounding regions.
