The radKIDS program and DARE program is ran over several weeks during the Optimist Safety City Summer Academy, which is taught by certified radKIDS’ and DARE Instructor Officer Eric Mericle. The radKIDS training takes one week to complete which is approximately 10 hours of training. The ages for the Optimist Safety City Summer Academy is for 5 - 7 year olds in a morning session, and 8-9 year olds in an afternoon session. Registration for the Optimist Safety City Summer Academy takes place the first full week of April ( Mon. – Fri. ) each year by calling the Optimist Safety City between the hours of 8:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Registering early in the registration process is recommended since limited class slots fill up quickly. After registering by phone, a confirmation form will be sent out along with other forms that parents will have to have completed and signed, and bring with them the first day of class. The Optimist Safety City also has spring field trips available during the school year for any pre-school or elementary school that wishes to take advantage of this opportunity. Selective components of the radKIDS Program is presented during the field trips, which includes riding bikes and going through a fire training smoke house. The Optimist Safety City also has selective radKIDS presentations that can be done at the schools in the City of Lima upon request, as well as the full radKIDS Program in those City of Lima schools that have the time it takes to complete the full program, and has the facilities available to conduct the extensive hands on training that’s required for the full radKIDS Program.

TheLima Police Department and Lima Noon Optimist Club are partnering up to do the Safety City Trunk or Treat on Saturday, October 25, 2025, from 12pm-2pm. This is a huge event with businesses in the parking lot and inside Safety City passing out all kids of treats! We hope to see you there and can’t wait to see all the amazing costumes!! The sixth and final week of the Safety City Summer Academy 2025! What a great week with some awesome classes!! The children all did amazing and I am so proud of each and every one of them!!
I would like to thank everyone for a great year! To all the families, thank you for taking the time out of your day to bring the children to these classes. Thank you to Lima Fire Department Inspector Warren, and Inspector Shawn for all you do to teach the children safety in the Survive Alive house! And to Allen County (OH) Sheriff's Office Deputy Damian and Deputy Amy for coming out to help with the classes.
I also wants to give a big thank you to all the middle and high school helpers. You all are appreciated so much for volunteering a week, or more, of your summer vacation to help at Safety City!! You all are amazing young men and women and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for what you do here!
West Ohio Food Bank, McDonald's, and Westgate Entertainment Center. Thank you for all the donations of snacks, cookies and pizzas. Your partnership is appreciated more than you know!!

Last week was the fifth week of the Safety City Summer Academy!! We had a great time and the children were absolutely amazing!! The fourth week of the Safety City Summer Academy has wrapped up! The heat did not stop these kids from having fun and learning some valuable safety lessons! We are very proud of all of them and we’re sad to see the week end! We did try to beat the heat with a sprinkler outside to cool them down! Thank you to everyone for making this a great week! And to McDonald's, Westgate Entertainment Center, and the West Ohio Food Bank for the donations of food, snacks, and water for the class!

The first week of the Safety City Summer Academy has come to an end. What an amazing group of kids we had! If this is any indication of how the summer will be we are excited!! Thank you to all the parents, grandparents, other family members, and friends who took the time out of their day to get the kids to and from Safety City! We hope they all had fun and learned a lot this week! And a huge thank you to all the middle and high school students who volunteered a week of their summer to help this week! We couldn’t have done this without you!

I want to apologize for tagging the wrong Nutrien business when i first posted this.

Nutrien Lima Nitrogen employees came out last week and updated their building! It looks amazing and we can’t thank you all enough for what you did! This building may be in the back of Safety City, but if you drive by it is guaranteed to catch your eye!! The children who come through here are going to love it!!
