We often use expressions such as “I had a gut feeling” or “Like a punch to the gut.” However, did you know that there is a scientific basis for these phrases? The enteric nervous system provides the explanation. The enteric nervous system (ENS), also referred to as the ‘second brain,’ serves as the primary link between the brain and the gut. Located within the gastrointestinal wall, this intricate network of neurons comprising the ENS is comparable in complexity to the spinal cord. By utilizing hormones, neurotransmitters, and other signaling molecules, these neurons collaborate with the brain to regulate the gastrointestinal tract. One of the primary functions of the ENS is to monitor the trillions of microbes in the gut and convey this information to the brain. The vagus nerves transmit these signals from the ENS to the brain.
