“When I went to India to study with my yoga teacher, it was very eye opening. Here in the west, we tend to make yoga more about "fitness" and the roots of yoga are more about a lifestyle. I think we sometimes dishonor the practice by making it into a weight-loss or a fitness thing and really, that’s just a side effect of the actual practice of yoga - it’s so much bigger than that and it’s not meant to be catered to anybody specifically. Honoring the philosophy doesn’t mean you’ll become Hindu. I think you can honor something without worshipping it. It’s not supposed to change your belief system; religious, political or anything. None of that is the point or the platform here - you belong here if you want to be here. There’s room for everyone as long as you’re here with good intentions for yourself and the people around you. I’ve had people of all ages attend, from 8 year olds to 80 year olds.

Over the years, I've meticulously studied yoga philosophy and I’ve taken an additional 300 hour training that was trauma informed. I’ve done the maximum amount of training I can do by the Yoga Alliance, though I'll never stop learning. I’ve taught more than 2,000 classes. Last year, I applied through the Yoga Alliance and the Healing Shack is a registered Yoga School. It’s still hard to get people in this area to participate. Most of my students/participants come from Minnesota or the Decorah area. I want yoga and community to be available to people whether they can pay or not, so I try to make things free-will donation when I can. Being a Yoga school is very important to me and when I see yoga misrepresented I just cringe. I have the opportunity to make sure we’re sharing the practice with integrity and the foundation from which it came, and when I'm teaching people who want to teach it to others, that’s my mission.“ - Laura 7/7

“This spot in the yard has always been my favorite place to come back to and sit among the trees. One night in 2013, I sat on the edge of the bed next to my husband as he was falling asleep and I said ‘what if we could build a little spot in the yard that could be a gathering place for people who need support? Just free-will donation, gather up in a circle, and talk about what’s upsetting you and what you need people to see from your soul that you can’t express.’ His response was just… ‘we can do that.’ He is a contractor and has done construction so about a year later he built the 'shack'. The ‘Healing Shack’ was just the name that I was calling it until I came up with something else, but alas, it’s still the Healing Shack. I think in this area, most people are like, ‘what’s she doing out there?’ I think it’s hard to describe to people that this is just a safe space to come and be in community with others.

Because I had this space with the Healing Shack, I started looking for yoga teachers that would come and teach here but I couldn’t come up with anything. The opportunity came up for me in 2016 to do a 200 hour training in Decorah. I did that and I was able to start offering yoga classes. Once I did the training though I ended up with more questions which I didn’t realize at the time, was the point. You have to dive deeper. I gained confidence as I taught my classes which have always been free-will donation. I want everyone to feel like they can come. There’ll be other things we do like different healing modalities, healing touch, or dream circles where we’ll work through dreams you’ve had. I’m sure I come off as kind of a weirdo in the community, but I think yoga helps to get people out here because at least they know what that is. Ultimately, if people need what we have to offer here, they’ll come. I’m just really trying to embody what it is that I believe, which is that we all need kindness and grace. Hopefully it’s a resource for people if they need it. It’s truly just a heart-led mission.“ - Laura 6/7
