If you are looking to establish veteran burial benefit eligibility, there are several types of discharge documents that may be used to establish honorable active military service. NCA will accept the following documents, with some exceptions, to verify eligibility when requesting a headstone or marker. The most common is a DD214, however others can be used.

Some veteran cemeteries are open for burial of a casket and urn while others are open for urn burial only. There are also veteran cemeteries closed for burial. You can find out if the cemetery you wish to be buried in is open using the Find a Cemetery page.

You could get a monthly payment based on the work history of the family member who died.
Lump-sum death payment
Spouses or some minor children could get a one-time death benefit payment of $255 too.

If you're eligible for Survivor and another benefit, you’ll choose the payment that’s best for you. The payments won’t be added together. You can also switch benefits later. For example, you could start with Survivor benefits and then change to Retirement at age 70 when that payment is highest.
