Benefits of Class 4 Laser Therapy & Dry Needling: The Perfect Combination

Looking to enhance your healing journey? At our clinic, we combine two powerful therapeutic modalities that work synergistically to accelerate your recovery:

✨ Class 4 Laser Therapy delivers deep penetrating light energy that:

Reduces inflammation & pain
Accelerates tissue repair
Improves circulation
Releases endorphins for natural pain relief

💉 Dry Needling complements these benefits by:

Releasing trigger points in tight muscles
Breaking up adhesions
Improving range of motion
Reducing muscle tension at the source

When used together, these treatments offer a comprehensive approach to musculoskeletal issues—the laser therapy creates the optimal cellular environment for healing while dry needling addresses the mechanical restrictions in your soft tissues.

Back Pain? Here’s What the Research Says About Conservative Care

We stay up-to-date with the latest research—and it continues to support conservative, non-invasive treatments like spinal manipulation for back pain relief.

🔍 What the Science Says:

A 2017 JAMA review found spinal manipulation improves pain and function in acute low back pain.

Cochrane Review: Just as effective as exercise or standard care for chronic cases.

Spine Journal: Patients saw faster pain relief with manipulation vs. usual medical care.

🛠 What Conservative Care Includes:

Joint Manipulation – Improves movement and reduces pain.

Active Rehab – Exercise and mobility work improve long-term function.

Education – Knowing how to manage pain helps patients recover faster.

Lifestyle Tips – Better posture, stress, and sleep habits matter.

📚 Guidelines Agree:
Major organizations (like the American College of Physicians and The Lancet) recommend conservative care first—before meds or surgery.

💰 Why It Matters:

Lower cost than long-term meds or surgery

Safe when done by trained professionals

Helps people return to work and activity faster

✅ Our Approach: Not all back pain is the same. We tailor care to each person and know when to treat, when to refer, and how to get the best results.

Dealing with back pain? Evidence-based care might be your best first step.

Research-Backed: How Conservative Care and Joint Manipulation Effectively Treat Back Pain

As healthcare providers committed to evidence-based practice, we’re continually encouraged by the growing body of research supporting conservative approaches to treating back pain. For those suffering from this common condition, understanding these non-invasive options can be life-changing.

Multiple high-quality studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of spinal manipulation therapy (SMT) for back pain relief:

-The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) published a systematic review in 2017 finding that spinal manipulation provides significant improvement in pain and function for acute low back pain.

-Research in the Spine Journal found that patients receiving manipulation experienced greater short-term pain relief than those receiving only conventional medical care.

Joint manipulation works best as part of a comprehensive conservative care approach that includes:

1. Active Rehabilitation
2. Patient Education
3. Lifestyle Modifications

Beyond effectiveness, research highlights the economic and safety advantages:

-Studies show conservative care results in lower healthcare costs compared to surgery or long-term medication management.

-Research indicates faster return-to-work times for patients receiving early conservative intervention.

The research is clear: conservative care including joint manipulation provides effective, safe, and cost-efficient treatment for many types of back pain. By addressing the root causes of dysfunction rather than masking symptoms, we help patients achieve lasting relief and improved function.

Natural Healing: What Science Tells Us About Herniated Discs

Did you know that many herniated discs can actually heal on their own?

Research published in the BMJ by Chang, Shymon, and Powell demonstrates that the body has remarkable natural healing abilities when it comes to disc herniations. Their study showed that over time, the body can actually resorb herniated disc material through inflammatory processes, leading to natural symptom relief.

This doesn’t mean you should ignore back pain! While natural resolution occurs in many cases, proper spinal stability is crucial to support this healing process and prevent future injuries.

It has been our experience that often times people are doing a few exercises that are good for the them and a few that are wrong and making the problem worse. We pride ourselves in making sure we are giving you exercises specific to your needs.

At LPSM we focus on enhancing spinal stability through targeted exercises that strengthen your core muscles, improve posture, and optimize movement patterns. This comprehensive approach supports your body’s natural healing mechanisms while building resilience against future problems.

If you’re dealing with back pain or disc issues, remember that conservative care approaches can be incredibly effective. Schedule a consultation today to discover how we can work with your body’s natural healing processes while building the stability your spine needs for long-term health!

Old Man Basketball vs. March Madness: When Reality Checks the Ego

Every March, as NCAA basketball takes over our screens, something magical happens on community courts nationwide. Men in their 40s, 50s, and beyond lace up their sneakers, convinced the fire of their college days still burns just as bright.

There’s nothing quite like watching 20-year-old elite athletes execute perfect alley-oops to make a 52-year-old accountant believe he can still “take it to the hole” despite not having touched his toes since the Bush administration.

Monday mornings bring a parade of limping heroes to chiropractic offices nationwide. The lower back that seized up after an ambitious rebound attempt. The twisted ankle from a crossover gone wrong. The shoulder that doesn’t quite work right after that “game-winning” three-point attempt.

Our office understands this seasonal phenomenon and is ready to help you recover from your moment of March Madness-inspired glory. When the spirit is willing but the body rebels, we’re just a phone call away from getting you back on the court—perhaps with slightly more realistic expectations next time.

Track season is right around the corner so we are talking Shin Splints!

Shin splints (medial tibial stress syndrome) can sideline even the most dedicated athletes and active individuals. As a chiropractors we often see patients struggling with this common but painful condition.

What causes shin splints?

-Overuse and repetitive stress on the shinbone and connective tissues
-Sudden changes in exercise intensity or duration
-Training on hard or uneven surfaces
-Improper footwear with inadequate support
-Biomechanical issues like flat feet or high arches
-Muscle imbalances between anterior and posterior leg compartments

Effective treatment approaches:

REST: Reduce activity levels until pain subsides

Compression: compression sleeves can help reduce tightness and pain

Proper footwear with adequate arch support

Gradual return to activity using the 10% rule (increase intensity by no more than 10% weekly)

Stretching and strengthening exercises for the calves, hamstrings, and anterior tibialis

When to seek professional care:

If you’re experiencing persistent shin pain that doesn’t improve with rest and home care, it’s time to consult a healthcare professional. We provide targeted treatments including:

-Gait analysis to identify biomechanical issues
-Custom orthotic prescription
-Manual therapy techniques to restore proper tissue mobility
-Personalized exercise programming
-Dry needling or instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization

Don’t let shin pain keep you from performing your best!

One Important Thing Most Active Adults Ignore: Recovery

As an active adult, you’re committed to fitness. You push through workouts, challenge yourself with new routines, and prioritize movement in your busy life. But are you giving equal attention to recovery?

Recovery isn’t just rest—it’s an essential part of your fitness journey that prevents injuries, improves performance, and extends your active lifestyle for years to come.

Why recovery matters for active adults:

When you exercise, you create microscopic damage to muscle fibers. It’s during recovery that your body repairs and strengthens these tissues. Without proper recovery, you risk chronic pain, decreased performance, and potential injury.

Recovery techniques you should know:

-Myofascial Release helps break up adhesions in connective tissue, improving mobility and reducing pain. Whether through foam rolling or professional treatment, this technique addresses the fascial network that surrounds all muscles.

-Mobility training goes beyond static stretching to improve functional range of motion. Incorporating dynamic mobility exercises helps maintain joint health, prevents movement restrictions, and enhances performance in daily activities and workouts. Even 10-15 minutes of dedicated mobility work can dramatically improve recovery and prevent injury.

-Dry needling targets trigger points in muscles to release tension and improve blood flow. This technique can provide relief from chronic pain and improve range of motion.

-Chiropractic adjustments ensure proper joint alignment and nervous system function. Regular adjustments help maintain optimal movement patterns and prevent compensatory injuries.

-Class 4 laser therapy accelerates tissue healing by increasing cellular energy production. This non-invasive treatment reduces inflammation and pain while promoting faster recovery.

-Contrast therapy (sauna and cold plunge) reduces inflammation, improves circulation, and speeds muscle recovery. Alternating between heat and cold creates a pumping effect that flushes metabolic waste from tissues.

Don’t let your commitment to fitness be undermined by neglecting recovery.

Spring Running Injuries: Prevention Tips for the New Season

As the weather warms up, many people are dusting off their running shoes and hitting the pavement. While running is an excellent form of exercise, it’s important to be mindful of common injuries that can occur, especially when transitioning from indoor to outdoor activities after winter.

Here are some key running injuries to watch for and prevention strategies to share with your patients:

-Runner’s knee (patellofemoral pain syndrome)
-Achilles tendinitis
-Plantar fasciitis
-IT band syndrome
-Shin splints
-Stress fractures

Prevention tips we advise include proper warm-up routines, gradually increasing mileage (the 10% rule), wearing appropriate footwear, cross-training, and incorporating strength exercises targeting hip stabilizers and core muscles.

At LPSM we have a combined 35 years of treating many running injuries of all types. Our evaluation and treatment procedures are specifically designed to find the cause of pain and address those issues. In our office we have the space to watch our athletes run and walk. We also use force plates to objectively identify issues with symmetry when running. If you have a running related injury don’t hesitate to reach out!

Patients are constantly asking about different types of supplements. Among a few others, below are a few that we think are really good. Message us with any questions about other supplements we recommend.

Collagen Peptides:

-Research shows that collagen supplementation can help maintain cartilage integrity and potentially reduce joint pain, especially in active individuals and those with osteoarthritis

-It may support connective tissue repair and could help reduce recovery time from soft tissue injuries

-Studies suggest it can improve skin elasticity and hydration when taken consistently

-The typical recommended dosage is 10-15g daily, ideally taken with vitamin C to enhance absorption

Creatine (specifically creatine monohydrate):

-One of the most extensively studied supplements, with strong evidence for improving muscle strength, power output, and lean body mass

-Can enhance post-workout recovery and reduce muscle damage markers

-May provide cognitive benefits, particularly in vegetarians who might have lower baseline levels

-The standard protocol is 5g daily, with no need for loading phases

-Safe for long-term use according to current research

Combining these supplements could be particularly beneficial for:

-Post-injury recovery programs
-Older adults looking to maintain muscle mass and joint health
-Athletes aiming to optimize performance and recovery
-Individuals with chronic joint conditions

The risk for fatal cardiovascular disease was 50% lower for men who used the sauna 4-7 times per week compared to men that used the sauna 1 time per week according the article, “Sauna use as lifestyle practice to extend healthspan” by Rhonda Patrick and Teresa Johnson in ScienceDirect.

In addition to improving cardiovascular health, it likely helps to reduce the risk of so many other diseases as well! There is no magic bullet when it comes to health but this one will get a big bang for the buck. Read about the different heat shock proteins below.

HSP70: This is one of the most well-studied heat shock proteins. When activated by heat stress:
-Helps repair damaged proteins in cells
-Protects against muscle damage and helps with muscle recovery
-Supports immune system function
-May help prevent neurodegenerative diseases by preventing protein misfolding

HSP90: Another crucial heat shock protein that:
-Helps stabilize other proteins during stress
-Supports cellular signaling pathways
-Plays a role in hormone receptor function
-Assists in protein folding and transport

HSP32 (also known as heme oxygenase-1):
-Has powerful anti-inflammatory effects
-Provides cardiovascular protection
-Acts as an antioxidant in the body
-Helps protect against oxidative stress

HSP60:
-Primarily works in mitochondria (the cell’s power plants)
-Helps fold proteins correctly
-Supports cellular energy production
-Plays a role in the immune response

Welcome to Lincoln Performance & Sports Medicine!

From Dr. Tyler Ideus, Physical Medicine Specialist | Owner

I want to spend what time you have given me to read this by telling you the foundational aspects of this practice.

  • We believe “health care” is helping people truly understand their issue at the root cause, how they got there and educating them about how to correct it.

  • We believe the systems of the body can never be separated — one system affects all systems.
