Big milestone in our Red-tailed Hawk journey today, the 3rd baby officially took flight, and our empty nester era has begun! 🦅

The nest may be quieter now, but the young hawks are still close by. We’ve been spotting them soaring around, practicing their hunting skills, and occasionally returning to visit and play near the nest.

We’ll definitely miss always seeing three little faces peeking over the nest, but we’re excited to watch their next chapter!

Our red-tailed hawk babies are growing up fast! Over the past few days, we’ve spotted them hopping around the nest and testing their balance while building strength. It won’t be long before they’re ready to take their first flights.

Watching them grow outside our exam room windows has been such a special experience for both our staff and patients. Every stage brings a little more personality and independence.

A few new fun facts about red-tailed hawks:
• They can dive at speeds of around 100 mph when hunting
• They can soar for hours using warm air currents called thermals
• Their tails don’t turn the well-known rusty red color until they are about a year old
• Hawks help keep ecosystems balanced by naturally controlling rodent populations

Another week of watching these sweet little red-tailed hawks grow! It’s amazing how quickly they change from fluffy white chicks to curious little hawks. We love watching them and they seem to enjoy watching us too!
A few more facts about red-tailed hawks:
* They are one of the most common hawks in North America
* Their famous hawk scream is actually the sound used in movies for eagles, too!
*Their wingspan can reach up to 4 1/2 feet wide
*They often mate for life and may return to the same nesting area year after year.

Update from our Red-tailed Hawk nest: Today marks one month since our first chick hatched! It has been a joy for both staff and patients to watch them grow and thrive. They’re now mostly feathered, practicing wing exercises, and standing tall in the nest.
At about 40 days old, they’ll take the big leap and fledge (leave the nest). After that they’ll stick around nearby for a “branching” phase, continuing to build strength and independence over the next 4-10 weeks.
Stay tuned for more hawk updates!

Update from our Red-tailed Hawk nest: the babies are growing fast and eating a lot!
Fun fact: Red-tailed hawks have sharp eyesight that’s 8 times better than a human’s. From the air, they can spot a mouse on the ground from 100 feet away.

Just outside one of our exam room windows a pair of Red Tailed Hawks built their nest. We are excited to share our 3 newest neighbors.
A reminder of what family care is all about; watching little ones grow, making sure they are healthy, and being there every step of the way.
