Here are some reasons to use slow cookers at your gathering this 4th of July!

- A slow cooker uses less electricity than an oven.
- Slow cookers usually allow one-step preparation. Placing all the ingredients in the slow cooker saves preparation time and cuts down on cleanup
- A variety of foods can be cooked in a slow cooker, including soups, stews and casseroles.

REMEMBER: Do not store or reheat leftovers in your slow cooker for food safety.

It's National Agricultre week and the NDE is collaborating with the Nebraska Dry Bean Commission to promote dry beans in schools and homes across the state! Today we kicked off the first FCCLA recipe demonstration project. Students researched a recipe that included at least 1/2 cup of beans, tested the recipe with at least 5 other people, made changes to the recipe based on feedback, and prepared it at the FCCLA student leadership conference! The students all did a fantastic job, we had students from Cross County, East Buttler, and Ord Public schools participate. Mahaylee from Cross County made Peanut Glory Bars (with white beans puree included as part of the recipe) and walked away as the winner! All of the youth-generated recipes will be posted on the Beanstock website at: https://www.education.ne.gov/ns/farm-to-school/beanstock/
