Today Governor Jim Pillen proclaimed May 2026 as See to Learn Month in Nebraska, raising awareness of the program that provides free vision assessments to any 3-year-old in our state. For 15 years, Eye Surgical Associates, Sutton Linder & Sutton, Lincoln Surgical Hospital and Nebraska Surgery Center have supported Lincoln families during the holidays. ❤️ Staff donations are matched by physicians to double the impact.

The Nebraska Foundation for Children's Vision was one of three local organizations they chose to support this year. Today, Joanna Fenicle, RN, and Deanna Bohl delivered their donation to NFCV. Thank you to their generous staff and physicians for making this possible!

More than 80% of learning in the classroom is visual. If a child cannot see, a child cannot read – and if a child cannot read, a child cannot learn.

As Nebraska Children’s Vision Month comes to a close, remember that regular eye exams are essential to a child’s success in school and beyond. Early detection of vision problems can make all the difference in learning, development, and confidence.

Earlier this month, Dr. Faith Schneider and the team at EyeCare Associates LLC in York, NE, provided free vision exams for 19 students from York Elementary School. These students were referred based on the school’s required annual vision tests. Remarkably, all 19 students needed glasses, and each one received a pair.

This initiative marks the beginning of the eYES program, launched in partnership with the Nebraska Foundation for Children’s Vision. The York County Community Coalition generously funded the glasses.

May is Nebraska’s See to Learn Month, bringing awareness to the link between vision and childhood learning.

To help catch vision problems early, Nebraska’s Doctors of Optometry offer free vision assessments for 3-year-old children.

Dave McBride, Program Director of the Nebraska Foundation for Children's Vision, provided a presentation to the Nebraska City Rotary Club on April 9.

He shared that there is an important link between vision and early childhood learning and provided the warning signs and indications of vision deficiencies. He also shared why comprehensive eye exams are so important for children before they enter grade school.

The event was reported by the Nebraska City News-Press in this article.
