Today is Military Spouse Appreciation Day, and I want to recognize my wife, Sue.

During my 22 years in the Navy, she carried far more than most people will ever see. Through multiple deployments, long separations, missed holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, late-night phone calls, uncertainty, and the constant stress that military families live with, she held everything together at home while I was away serving.

I spent years away from her over the course of my career, including deployments and countless periods away from home. Every time duty called, she accepted the sacrifice without complaint and continued moving forward with strength, resilience, and grace.

Military spouses serve too. Their sacrifices are quieter, but they are just as real.

Sue, thank you for standing beside me through every chapter of this journey. Thank you for your strength, patience, loyalty, and unwavering support. I could not have done any of it without you.

Happy Military Spouse Appreciation Day. I love you.

This is not just a gunshot class.

Defensive Medicine 1 teaches practical emergency skills that apply to real-life situations where someone is badly hurt and help may not be there yet.

That could be a car crash.
A workplace injury.
A serious fall.
An outdoor accident.
A range injury.
Or any emergency where severe bleeding or serious injury becomes the problem in front of you.

The goal is simple: understand what matters first, know what to do, and build enough hands-on practice to act with purpose instead of panic.

You do not need to be a medic. You need clear priorities, practical skills, and training that makes sense in the real world.

Most emergencies do not happen in perfect conditions.

They happen at home, at work, on the road, at practice, at church, at the gym, or out with family and friends.

A bad fall. A car crash. A serious cut. A workplace injury. A sports accident. A moment where someone is hurt and everyone is looking around, wondering what to do next.

This class is for regular people who want to be more prepared.

You do not need a medical background.
You do not need prior training.
You do not need to be a first responder.

You just need to be willing to learn practical skills that could help someone during the critical minutes before EMS arrives.

In Defensive Medicine, you will learn hands-on emergency skills including:

How to control severe bleeding until help arrives
How to pack and pressure a serious wound
Shock recognition
What to do first when someone is seriously injured
How to think clearly when people around you are panicking
Basic med kit evaluation

This is practical, real-world training for parents, spouses, coaches, teachers, church members, coworkers, drivers, outdoor enthusiasts, and anyone who wants to be better prepared.

When a traumatic event happens, the body and mind do not always respond the way people think they will.

Stress narrows attention. Fine motor skill drops. Decision-making slows. People can hesitate, panic, or freeze.

That is why training matters.

In a real emergency, you do not rise to the occasion. You default to the level of training you have built and the skills you have actually practiced.

Knowledge alone is not enough. You need reps. You need pressure. You need to work through problems before the day comes when it matters.

The goal is not just to know what to do.
The goal is to be able to do it when the situation is ugly, fast, and real.

Yesterday's Defensive Medicine 1 class in Elk Grove was a solid day of training.

This group showed up ready to work. We spent the day building practical skills, putting hands on equipment, and working through the kinds of problems that have to be handled fast when someone is seriously injured.

What I appreciate most is that nobody just sat back and watched. People trained, asked questions, and put in the reps.

That is the point of this class. Not just information, but capability.

Thank you to everyone who came out and trained hard.

More classes are coming.

Training is not just about knowing what a tourniquet is or having a med kit nearby.

It is about understanding what to do, when to do it, and how to stay effective under real pressure.

In Defensive Medicine 1, we focus on the critical minutes before EMS arrives and the decisions that can make the biggest difference.

This training is not just for gunshot wounds. The skills apply to car accidents, falls, sports injuries, workplace trauma, and other serious emergencies in which someone nearby must act.

Tomorrow morning in Elk Grove, we will be working through hands-on, practical training designed to help ordinary people respond more effectively in serious situations.

If you have been thinking about taking this class, this is the time.

Hands-on matters.

In an emergency, it is not enough to own the gear. You need to know how to use it under pressure, with your hands working, your brain moving, and time working against you.

That is what we train in Defensive Medicine 1.

This class is built around practical, hands-on skills for the critical minutes before EMS arrives, including:

life-threatening bleeding control
wound packing
tourniquet use
shock recognition
penetrating trauma priorities
med kit evaluation

This training is not just for gunshot wounds. These skills can apply to car accidents, falls, sports injuries, workplace trauma, and other serious emergencies where immediate action matters.

If you carry a firearm, protect your family, serve on a church safety team, work in security, or simply want to be more capable when someone is badly hurt, this class is for you.

A med kit is only useful if it has the right gear for the problem in front of you, and you know how to use it.

Too many people carry equipment they have never trained with, or leave out the items that matter most when time is critical.

In Defensive Medicine 1, we talk through what makes sense, what does not, and what actually earns a place in your kit.

Students can also bring what they currently carry so we can discuss what they have, what they need, and what actually matters.
