WIC-Lincoln Lancaster County Health Department

WIC-Lincoln Lancaster County Health Department WIC provides community resources. WIC is the nation's most successful public health nutrition program.

The WIC program helps build healthy families by providing healthy foods free to pregnant women, new mothers, infants and young children and supports and educates moms to help them breastfeed successfully. We provide health food, nutrition education, breastfeeding support, and community referrals to income-eligible pregnant or breastfeeding women, infants, and children up to 5 years old.

This week's final tip is all about role modeling!๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿฆฐ๐Ÿ‘ง If YOU eat your fruits and veggies, your child likely will too! ๐Ÿฅ—

If you buy fresh fruits and veggies, cut and prep them right when you get home and put them in accessible containers so that they're easier to grab in a hurry. Sometimes it can help to have fresh, frozen, AND canned fruits and vegetables in the house so they are always ready and available to eat. Did you know that your WIC benefits cover all three? ๐Ÿฅฆ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŒฝ๐Ÿฅฆ๐Ÿ‡๐Ÿฅ•๐Ÿซ›

In honor of National Nutrition Month, we will also be doing a โœจFeature Fridayโœจ with all of the Registered Dietitians who are happy to serve you here at LLCHD!

Today, we have Shelly and Erika! We asked them what their favorite go-to snack is when they are short on time. Their answers? โฌ‡โฌ‡

๐Ÿฉท Shelly: "My favorite go-to snack when I'm on the run is probably a string cheese ๐Ÿง€ and some fresh fruit like grapes. ๐Ÿ‡ It fills me up and keeps me going!" ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ

๐Ÿฉต Erika: "When I'm in a hurry and need a snack, I like to grab a banana ๐ŸŒ with one hand and a spoonful of peanut butter ๐Ÿฅœ with the other. No plate needed! If I have a few extra minutes, I'll add them to a piece of toast. ๐Ÿž"

Fun fact - Shelly and Erika's snacks are fully covered with your WIC benefits! ๐Ÿ“As WIC dietitians, we help teach moms how to make balanced meals and snacks that not only keep you full and satisfied, but also serve as healthy choices for you and your family! ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ๐Ÿฅ—

Today's tip to keep fruits and veggies in sight is to have your kiddos help make a fruit salad for a dinner side! Examples include:

๐Ÿ“Canned peaches (packed in 100% fruit juice) mixed with fresh strawberry slices
๐ŸMango cubes (thawed from frozen) paired with pineapple slices
๐ŸซBerry salad with sliced raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries
๐ŸŒBanana slices mixed with strawberry slices

Depending on your child's age, they can help you rinse/wash the produce, slice softer fruits with a kid friendly knife, or adding the ingredients to the bowl and stirring. Enjoy! ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿ‹โ€๐ŸŸฉ๐Ÿ‰๐Ÿฅ

On the first Wednesday of every March, we celebrate IBCLC Day!๐Ÿคฐ๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ‘ถ๐Ÿผ๐Ÿคฑ This is an opportunity to recognize the skills and dedication of those who provide lactation care to new mothers, expectant parents, or anyone who is needing extra support on their breastfeeding journey. ๐Ÿ’ž

A very talented IBCLC we have on our team is Lesley Cook!๐ŸŒท In honor of IBCLC Day, we asked her a few questions:

๐Ÿฉท What inspired you to take the next step to become an IBCLC after working as a CLC?
โ€œWhen I was in school doing my internship to be a Registered Dietitian, I found that my WIC rotation and learning more about breastfeeding really peaked my interest. As I found my first job with WIC and there was an emphasis on learning more about breastfeeding, I attended my first week-long breastfeeding training program. Through the years I did more trainings and then was encouraged to do the next level of breastfeeding training in becoming a CLC and then an IBCLC. I wasn't sure if I would be able to do it, but I studied hard and logged the hours for breastfeeding support and passed the test!! I am so glad because I love working with WIC families - helping with breastfeeding is so rewarding!โ€

๐Ÿฉท If you could tell all breastfeeding moms one thing, what would it be?
"Something that all new parents should know is that a baby cries to ask for something to be different. Sometimes it can mean hunger, but because it's the only way they communicate, it could mean many other things- like "I want to be close like when I was in the womb." It's important to be patient with yourself and your baby as you are getting to know each other. If breastfeeding isn't smooth at first, there are solutions. There is help and Lincoln is a great place to be for breastfeeding support. If you need a list of local breastfeeding support resources let us know! We are glad you are here and want you to meet your goals with breastfeeding, health, nutrition and beyond!โ€

If youโ€™re expecting a baby soon or are on a breastfeeding journey now, let us help support you! ๐Ÿคฑ๐Ÿ’œWe have 4 Certified Lactation Consultants on our team in addition to Lesley being our International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. We are here to help!โœจ
