Anyone that knows me, knows that I love anatomy and physiology! In Pilates all of the muscles in this illustration are worked, as it provides balance. My favorite though is the transverse abdominals. When we contract these muscles, you have two other muscle groups that work as a force couple. The multifidus and the pelvic floor. Imagine every exercise you do in Pilates, contracts the transverse abdominals as well as the multifidus (posterior spinal muscle) and the pelvic floor and you don’t even need to think about it! Best of all, as you focus on breathing they all contract!
Seems complex you think, but truly it’s not! If you struggle with back pain and imbalance issues, Pilates may be the perfect program for you! With proper positioning, you will have a cylinder effect of support for your entire body!
