Favor the bitter, astringent and pungent tastes in your meals. This helps the body remove stagnate accumulations and congestions from the winter months. Move into Spring with a gentle detox while eating delicious nurturing foods. Let food be the medicine and medicine be the food.

Spring harvest!!
Eating from the backyard…
Asparagus is a wonderful spring tonic, and is emerging from the soil now. In Ayurveda when we follow the rhythm of nature, we are aligning into our perfect health. The Earth is producing exactly what the body needs to gently cleanse from the dormancy of winter into the regeneration of spring.
Asparagus holds the astringent, bitter and sweet taste, which support the kidneys in a gentle cleanse with its diuretic properties soothing the mucus membranes, GI and urinary tract, reducing water retention and inflammation.
For a tasty treat combine asparagus with the powerful nutrition of nettles which are also offering themselves as medicine this spring. They cook up and taste similar to spinach.
See previous posts on the nutritive value of nettles. (allergy and arthritis relief, blood sugar management, urinary and prostate health, highly nutritious and rich in vitamins and minerals…)
And there’s a reason that Easter eggs are associated with spring! Chickens (raised outdoors) are responding to the increase in light and egg laying is prolific. Be sure to source your eggs locally, organically and humanely.
We become the quality of food that we eat when we consume the energy of the food.

“ I am food. I am the consumer of food. I eat the consumer of Foods. I consume the whole universe.”
-Taittiriya Upanishad 11.16
