January is the most yin (inward & still) time of year. It is a restorative time to rebuild tissues, rest, and reflect inward before we emerge again and move back into action in mid-March.

As the fundamental rhythms that bring true healing at the deepest level are being pushed aside by our collective culture, leaving us with poor models of genuine health, we need to try to stay true to a simpler, wiser way of living.

We have grown so accustomed to continuous stimulation that we have lost a sense of connection to our own deeper resources of healing, without even realizing it.

The rise in a multitude of ways to have a quick fix, a good body, and perfect health is another manifestation of our cultural fragmentation. While simple, direct ways of living, eating, and following the flow of nature have become totally uninteresting to our hyped-up Western culture. If it’s not sexy, trendy, or going to make us famous, then it’s not of value to us at all!

This is the danger of our current way of being in relationship to our bodies and our lives; it is a direct affront to the sacredness and true purpose of life itself.

In many circumstances, even as we work toward balance and align ourselves with accurate resources for healing, we can still find ourselves struggling to find a sense of health and peace amid the collective's overall disharmony.

The ancient dharmic teachings predicted that this would be a very difficult time in the world with more darkness and disharmony. So now more than ever, we must make a very real commitment to stay connected to the inner source of healing and to bring this through into all areas of our lives.

Good herbal teas for winter are ginger, cinnamon, and cardamom to warm the body from the inside out-they will help to burn toxins and keep digestion robust.

🌿 Clove protects from roaming viruses.

🌿 Coriander will give good urination and help to remove toxins from the bladder.

🌿 Soothing licorice and tulsi are good for immunity, and chamomile helps to calm winter anxiety.

🥛Gently boiled, warm spiced milk with 1/2 tsp of turmeric or with 1/2 tsp cardamom and nutmeg before bed will soothe and counter the cold, will increase Ojas, the juice of immunity, and will support restful sleep.

🫚Ginger tea, particularly Sunthi (Ayurvedic Ginger), on its own or with a spoonful of raw honey, is one of the best healing herbal teas for winter.

According to Ayurveda and traditional five-element medicine, it is a vulnerable time for health as the season grows colder, windier, and wetter.

❄️During this time, the body’s natural immunity can become weakened, although it doesn’t have to. 💪

❄️We can make efforts to move through the season with enough rest, wholesome food, and a steady stabilizing routine. 🍲

❄️ Reduce your schedule. Don't always be pushing and doing something. Take small moments in each day to rest. Go to bed earlier now, by 9-10 pm. 🛌

❄️This time, just after the winter solstice, is delicate because our energy is most depleted. We need to protect our yang (outward fire energy), stop burning the candle at both ends, and allow this energy to restore itself. 🕯️

❄️Move inward and this time of year to replenish your energy. If we do this now, our immunity will be stronger, and our energy will be much more robust when spring arrives. 🌷

Dear Friends~Join us in our efforts this December to ensure that others have access to sufficient food. In our daily lives, we can easily forget that many people struggle to have enough to eat each day and to feed their children.

During a time when most of us feel abundance and celebration, we can turn our attention to others whose lives are much more difficult and who live with the worry of how their basic needs will be met.

How you can help:

Now, through Tuesday, December 23rd, you can bring your gifts of non-perishable items to Midwest Dharma Wheel, and we will distribute all donations to the Food Bank of Lincoln.

Here is a list of the Food Bank’s most needed commodities:

Food Items
Tuna and other canned meats
Canned fruits and vegetables
Peanut butter, Nut butters
Macaroni and cheese and other boxed dinners
Brown rice and long-grain white rice (not instant)
100% fruit juice
Olive oil
Spices
