My name is Nikki Camfield, and I’m a Family Nurse Practitioner. On paper, my role at Lincoln County Hospital and Clinic looks straightforward—I cover the emergency room, see patients in the clinic during the week, and help wherever I’m needed, often on a walk-in basis. In reality, no two days ever look the same, and that’s exactly how I like it.
I’ve been drawn to medicine for as long as I can remember. I’ve always loved the science behind it—the way the human body works, how biology can be both incredibly complex and beautifully precise. Just as important, I’ve always felt a pull toward helping people when they’re at their most vulnerable. That combination led me into nursing more than 23 years ago and eventually to earning my master’s degree from Wichita State in 2012.
My path has taken me through many different settings. I worked Med/Surg at Wesley Medical Center, spent years as an ER nurse at Via Christi in Wichita, and later at NMC Health in Newton. I’ve balanced family practice with emergency medicine, working full time in a clinic, PRN in emergency rooms, and filling in at small-town hospitals across Kansas. While I truly enjoy family practice, the ER has always been at the heart of what I do—it’s fast-paced, unpredictable, and deeply meaningful.
I came to Lincoln in June of 2020, initially drawn by the opportunity to practice rural healthcare. What I found was so much more. A typical day here might start by checking on inpatients, then heading to the clinic to see walk-in patients, with frequent trips over to the ER as patients arrive. The flow is constant, but it feels right—like I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be.
What I love most about my job is the relationships. In a small town, you don’t just treat a patient once and move on. You get to know people—their families, their stories, their lives. You see them in the grocery store or around town and get to ask how they’re really doing after an illness or hospital stay. That continuity, that connection, is something truly special.
After more than two decades in healthcare, there isn’t one single patient story that stands out—there are simply too many. Each one has left its mark on me in different ways, reminding me why I chose this path in the first place.
I grew up in Sedgwick, Kansas, and I still live there with my husband, but Lincoln has become my home away from home. Outside of work, we love traveling to national parks and hiking together. I’m slowly learning to play the fiddle, with hopes of someday joining a small band. I also enjoy reading, puzzles, working out—and I have to say, Lincoln’s gym is fantastic.
Healthcare has taken me many places, but Lincoln has a way of staying with you. For me, it’s not just where I work—it’s a community I truly care about.
