For Ioannis, a Sysmex service engineer in Massachusetts, helping others isn’t just something he does — “It’s who I am.” Inspired by family members affected by cancer, he volunteers in the Pan-Mass Challenge, biking 186 miles from one side of Massachusetts to the other to raise funds for cancer research. Tomorrow is Rare Disease Day, a time to shine a light on the 300 million people worldwide living with a rare condition. At Sysmex, we know that for many of these individuals, the path to a diagnosis is often long and complex.

Today, we are highlighting Pyruvate Kinase (PK) Deficiency—a rare, lifelong genetic enzyme disorder that causes red blood cells to break down faster than they can be replaced.

Because symptoms like fatigue, jaundice and anemia can vary significantly from person to person, PK deficiency is often underdiagnosed or mistaken for other conditions. Understanding the science behind the "rare" is the first step toward better patient outcomes.
