Thanksgiving is a time for reminiscing, reflecting, and togetherness.
For families caring for senior loved ones, it can also bring added stress.
Planning, hosting, and even attending holiday gatherings can be exhausting. Seniors may face challenges such as memory issues, health concerns, or being far from family. Caregivers often try to balance their own responsibilities while supporting their loved one.
Here are a few ways to help make the holiday more enjoyable and safe for everyone:
• Create a simple schedule. If your loved one has memory concerns, write out the plan for the day and set reminders for medications. Even during a busy holiday, routine matters.
• Keep meals senior-friendly. Include options such as lean turkey and nutrient-rich vegetables like sweet potatoes. Aim for a balanced plate to support dietary needs.
• Include moments of rest. Invite your senior to participate in calm activities such as watching a holiday movie or sharing their favorite Thanksgiving memories. It helps them feel involved without overexertion.
• Be mindful of mood. Holiday blues are real. Some seniors may feel sadness or reflect on loved ones who are no longer present. Gentle conversation and emotional support go a long way.
By planning early and keeping your senior’s needs in mind, Thanksgiving can be meaningful for the whole family.
