Welcome, April Freel, our new office assistant! 👋🏻

She is a motivated and organized administrative professional with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and over a decade of experience in customer service and office support. As a homeschooling mom of two, she's passionate about lifelong learning and personal growth - a journey that has been deeply fulfilling and transformative for her. Outside of work, she enjoys nature, reading, biking, swimming, and traveling. Her favorite adventures are filled with laughter, exploration, and making memories with her family.

Meet the Staff: Kim 🏌🏼‍♀️

For over two decades, Kim has dedicated her professional life to supporting students as a certified teacher, working primarily with 4th through 8th graders in Linden Community Schools. The majority of those were spent as a special education teacher, where she witnessed firsthand the profound connection between academic achievement and emotional well-being. While supporting students with diverse needs, she found herself increasingly drawn to the emotional and mental health challenges that often impacted their ability to succeed in school.

This growing passion for supporting the whole child—academically, socially, and emotionally—led her to pursue a Master’s degree in Counseling from Oakland University. She realized that her true calling extended beyond the classroom. She is a person students, families, and individuals turn to when they need a calm, compassionate presence to help them navigate life’s challenges.

Kim’s belief in the power of listening, empathy, and creating a safe space for others has led her to Balance Life Counseling, where she serves not only children and adolescents but also adults seeking emotional and mental health support.

Her extensive experience in education, her training in counseling, and her deep-rooted belief in the resilience and potential of every person guide her work. She is excited to continue this journey as a therapist at Balance Life Counseling —dedicated to helping others heal, grow, and thrive.

When she isn’t working, she enjoys the outdoors. She loves hiking, gardening, kayaking, golfing, and spending time with her two dogs.

Meet the Staff: Jared ⛰

I’m a therapist with a master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and a background in wellness coaching and strength training. After 15+ years helping people improve their physical well-being, I now support individuals (ages 13+) in exploring their inner world, navigating emotional challenges, and creating meaningful change. I work with depression, anxiety, substance use, trauma, emotional regulation, relationship issues, mood disorders, and phase-of-life transitions. My approach integrates psychodynamic therapy, ACT, and existential theory, with a focus on building strong, collaborative relationships. I’m especially passionate about working with young adults and those facing transitions, identity struggles, or relational issues.

Fun Fact:
I recently moved back to Linden after being gone for 20 years. Most recently, I lived in Sedona, Arizona, while completing my master's degree in clinical mental health counseling.

Meet the Staff: Simon 🐾

Simon is our resident gentle giant, coming in at around 170 lbs of pure love! 💛 As a therapy dog, he brings calm, comfort, and a whole lot of tail wags to the office. He loves meeting clients of all ages and is always happy to lend a paw during sessions.

When he’s off duty, you can find Simon playing ball or hanging out with his little brother at home. 🐶🎾

Meet the Staff: Katelyn 💛

Katelyn brings a wealth of experience and compassion to Balanced Life Counseling. After earning her dual master’s degree in community and school counseling from Oakland University, she supported students in middle and high schools while also creating programs that championed diversity and inclusion.

Today, she works with adolescents, teens, and adults navigating anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, chronic illness, relationship challenges, and LGBTQIA+ topics. Her calm presence and individualized approach make her a trusted support for clients of all backgrounds.

Outside the office, you’ll find Katelyn curled up with a good book and her three dogs. 🐾📚

Meet Kattie, one of our newest therapists at Balanced Life Counseling! With 25+ years of experience, she brings a deep passion for helping young children grow through play, connection, and care. Kattie specializes in working with kids under 10 and uses approaches like Play Therapy and CBT to help them build emotional tools that last a lifetime. Now accepting new clients!💙

A few weekends ago, at Flint Children's Museum, our therapist, Katelyn, and her dog, Simon, volunteered with VTAC’s therapy dog pack for a mental health awareness event. The kids just loved Simon!

We are hiring a part time receptionist / office assistant at our office in Linden. Mon-Thurs 3 hours a day in the office with additional remote hours on call. Office experience prefered and computer experience a must. We are looking for a reliable and friendly individual to answer phones, schedule appointments, general office duties, etc... for our busy office. Starting pay is $16-18 an hour to start.
