A groundbreaking study has raised serious concerns about erythritol, a popular sugar alcohol widely used in keto-friendly snacks, diet sodas, and “zero-sugar” products. Research now suggests that high consumption of this artificial sweetener may damage brain blood vessels and significantly increase the risk of stroke and other cardiovascular events.
Erythritol, often marketed as a “natural” sweetener because it occurs minimally in fruits, is typically industrially produced through fermentation. It gained popularity for its negligible calories and lack of impact on blood sugar—making it a staple in low-carb and diabetic diets. However, the new study indicates that elevated erythritol levels in the blood can cause inflammation and oxidative stress in the endothelial cells that line blood vessels, particularly in the brain. Over time, this may lead to reduced blood flow, clot formation, and an elevated risk of ischemic stroke.
The findings come at a time when sugar substitutes are being consumed in record amounts, often by individuals trying to manage weight or metabolic health. Unlike some earlier sweeteners tied only to gut issues or sugar cravings, erythritol now appears to pose a more direct vascular threat.
Researchers urge moderation and further investigation, especially for those with existing cardiovascular risk factors. Regulatory agencies may soon reeafety guidelines as more data emerges.
For now, this study serves as a critical reminder: just because a ingredient is “sugar-free” doesn’t automatically mean it’s safe. As with many modern food innovations, the full health implications may take years to uncover.
