Sciatica is not a specific diagnosis but rather a syndrome, with herniated discs and nerve-root compression being the main underlying causes in about 90% of cases. The prevalence of sciatica varies widely, ranging from 1.2% to 43%. Several factors, including smoking, obesity, occupational factors, health status, age, gender, and social class, are believed to contribute to the occurrence and development of sciatica. Scientific research suggests that acupuncture may help relieve pain by stimulating the central nervous system, which then triggers the release of chemicals into the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These chemicals either change the experience of pain or trigger the release of other chemicals and hormones that influence the body’s self-regulating systems.
