We welcome Emily Angerhofer at ABHS!

Emily is a licensed Clinical Social Worker and holds an MSW from the University of Maryland. She has over a decade of clinical experience in schools, focusing on cultural humility, restorative justice, and community building. Her practice is inclusive, and dedicated to healing generational curses. She works to support couples, families, and individuals using therapeutic techniques like narrative therapy and mindfulness, particularly in managing anxiety, depression, and trauma. She has a special interest in helping parents and siblings of children with special needs, drawing from her own experiences with kids on the Autism Spectrum. As a neurodiverse co-parenting woman, she help families navigate relationships and self-care, emphasizing the importance of wellbeing for a healthy family system.

Managing Your Mental Health Through the Holidays

As we approach this holiday season, some may experience stress, loneliness, anxiety and/or depression.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

As the holiday season approaches us many of us go through short periods of sadness, mood changes, less energy, etc.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a recurrent seasonal depression with symptoms that last 4 or more months usually appearing during the winter.

Some symptoms are:
- Persistent sad, anxious, or empty mood lasting for at least 2 weeks or more
- Changes in sleep or appetite or unplanned weight changes
- Social withdrawal
- Decreased energy, fatigue, or feeling slowed down
- Feelings of irritability, frustration, or restlessness

Some causes to SAD are:
- Vitamin D deficiency
- Increase/Decrease levels in Melatonin
- (Winter Patterned SAD) Due to daylight savings we don't get enough sunlight to help our serotonin levels function properly

Ways to treat SAD:
- Psychotherapy
- Medication Management
- Light Therapy
- Increase intake in Vitamin D
