F***l egg counts (FEC) are used to identify the presence of adult worms in your horse. This is important to establish which horses are contaminating the pasture (high shedders) as 80% of worms reside in only 20% of horses.

✅What is a FEC?
A f***l egg count is a simple test that measures the number of parasite eggs in a horse’s manure.
Why is it important?
A high parasite load can cause intestinal damage and can be a cause of colic. They also can be a reason for weight loss, poor hair coat, and unthriftiness. FEC allows us to tailor a deworming protocol to your herd, slowing parasite resistance to dewormers.

✅When do I worm?
It is generally accepted that results >300 eggs per gram (epg) indicate a significant burden and require worming. There are other circumstances that your veterinarian may recommend deworming.

✅When do I retest?
If your horse has a FEC of 300 epg, your veterinarian will recommend a dewormer to use and repeat the FEC 10-14 days later. This will allow us to assess the effectiveness of the dewormer and identify any drug resistance.

✅How do I get my horse tested?
Just collect a small sample of FRESH manure into a zip-lock bag labelled with your horse's name. You can pre-collect a sample and give to our vets at a wellness or drop off at the clinic.

🚜🐄 Watch Out for Hidden Toxins! 🌾

Spring and summer bring fresh pasture and growth—but they can also bring hidden dangers for farm animals. Many common plants, feeds, and chemicals can be toxic to cattle, horses, goats, sheep, and other livestock.

⚠️ Common toxin risks on farms include
• Toxic plants such as ragwort, nightshade, and certain ornamental plants
• Moldy or spoiled feed, which can produce harmful toxins
• Pesticides and herbicides stored or applied improperly
• Fertilizers and chemicals accidentally accessible to animals
• Treated seeds or grain that may contain toxic coatings

🐴 Signs of possible poisoning may include
• Sudden loss of appetite
• Weakness or stumbling
• Excessive drooling
• Colic or abdominal pain
• Unusual behavior or seizures

✅ Prevention Tips
• Regularly inspect pastures for unfamiliar plants
• Store chemicals and treated seed securely
• Dispose of spoiled feed immediately
• Introduce animals slowly to new pastures

If you notice any unusual symptoms in your animals, contact your veterinarian right away.

🐴💉 Keep Your Horse Healthy! 💉🐴
Did you know that vaccinating your horse is one of the most important ways to protect them from serious diseases? Some vaccines are essential for all horses, while others depend on your horse’s lifestyle and environment.
Core vaccines every horse should get:
🔹Tetanus – Prevents deadly lockjaw
🔹Rabies – Protects your horse and your family
🔹Eastern/Western Encephalomyelitis – Mosquito-borne brain infections
🔹West Nile Virus – Another serious mosquito-borne threat
🔹Non-core vaccines may be recommended based on risk:
🔹Equine Influenza & Herpesvirus – Respiratory illnesses
🔹Strangles – Contagious bacterial infection
🔹Potomac Horse Fever – Seasonal intestinal infection
🔹Rotavirus – Protects foals via pregnant mares
During your annual wellness exam you and your veterinarian can discuss what you like to do with your horse and which vaccines would best protect your horse.
Vaccines keep our horses healthy, but sometimes they can cause mild side effects—and that’s usually normal!
Common mild reactions (short-lived):
Swelling or soreness at the injection site 🟢
Slight fever 🌡️
Mild stiffness or tiredness 💤
reduced appetite 🍎

✅ Tips for a smooth vaccination day:
Monitor your horse for 24 hours
Light turnout and cold packs help with soreness
Remember: most side effects are mild and temporary, and vaccines protect your horse from dangerous diseases! 🐎❤️

Curious pets can find trouble in places people do not always expect. National Poison Prevention Awareness month is a good reminder to look around the home from a pet’s point of view.

Common risks include human medications on nightstands, certain houseplants and flowers, chocolate and xylitol sweetened treats, and cleaning or yard products left within reach.

If a pet ever seems off after getting into something, do not wait for symptoms to worsen. Call your veterinarian or other pet poison hotlines such as the ASPCA Poison Helpline for immediate assistance. Be sure to notify our clinic as soon as possible for further treatment and guidance.

03/05/2026

Your horse's annual wellness exam is an important component to your horse's overall health.

🐎 Why annual wellness exams matter:

✔️ Dental check 🦷
Horses' teeth continue to grow throughout their lifetime. Continual growth and wear can create several issues including sharp points, uneven wear, or missing/ broken teeth. This can lead to weight loss, behavioral issues, and poor feed absorption. During your horse's annual exam we can check the teeth and schedule an appointment for any needed dental care!

✔️ Heart and lung evaluation 🫁❤️
During a wellness exam, we carefully listen to your horse’s heart and lungs to be sure everything sounds normal. Listening to your horse’s heart and lungs helps detect murmurs, irregular rhythms, respiratory issues, and early signs of illness—often before clinical signs appear.

✔️ Body condition scoring 🐴
Body condition score (BCS) is a vital tool we use to help evaluate your horses overall health and wellness! BCS is a 1–9 scale used to evaluate a horse’s body fat and overall condition. A score of 5 is ideal for most horses—not too thin, not too heavy. We evaluate key areas like the neck, ribs, back, and tailhead. Using your horse's BCS we can help guide nutrition, track weight changes, prevent metabolic issues, and support long- term health.

✔️ Overall health assessment📋
We check your horse from nose to tail—looking at coat condition, eyes, gums, joints, hooves, and general behavior—to make sure everything is healthy and functioning well.

Preventive care helps catch issues early and keeps your horse thriving!
