Debris and pollutants from streets do indeed end up in waterways through storm sewers. Storm sewers are designed to collect rainwater and prevent flooding, but they also carry pollutants directly to rivers, streams, and other bodies of water without any treatment. This means that anything on the streets, like litter, oil, chemicals, and even soil, can be washed into the storm sewer system and ultimately contaminate our water sources.
Keep nearby storm sewers clean!
