🧠 Is It Just High Energy or Something More? Let’s Talk About ADHD (formerly also called ADD) in Kids!

School has started and this is when we typically start to see behavioral changes at home and at school. You could be getting some feedback from your child's teacher that tasks are difficult to complete, difficulty following directions, challenges with organization or multiple redirections are needed to stay focused on the task at hand.

At our office, we know how important early detection is when it comes to developmental and behavioral health. Here are a few signs that might suggest your child could benefit from an evaluation for ADHD:

🔹 Trouble focusing or paying attention
🔹 Easily distracted—even during play
🔹 Difficulty following directions or completing tasks
🔹 Forgetfulness and frequent daydreaming
🔹 Fidgeting, squirming, or constantly “on the go”
🔹 Interrupting or trouble waiting their turn
🔹 Struggling with organization (backpacks, homework, etc.)

These signs can show up at home, school, or during social time. While all kids can be distracted or full of energy sometimes, ongoing patterns that impact daily life deserve a closer look.

✨ Every child is unique. We're here to support you with evaluations, guidance, and care plans tailored to your child’s needs.

If you’re noticing these behaviors, schedule a visit with us today!

Let's face it, when the kids don't sleep it makes for a rough night for everyone in the family. Making sleep a priority is important. Not only do we crave it at the end of a long day but it also helps regulate nervous systems, puts us and the kids in a better mood, helps fight illness, and, obviously, more energy the next day. Here is a guide to help understand how much sleep our littles should get. If you're struggling with sleep reach out to your dr to help you navigate through your struggles.

Toddlers (1–2 yrs): 11–14 hours (naps included!)

Preschoolers (3–5 yrs): 10–13 hours

School-age kids (6–12 yrs): 9–12 hours

Teens (13–18 yrs): 8–10 hours

Tricks for Better Sleep Habits:
🌜 Keep a consistent bedtime—even on weekends
📖 Add a calming routine (storytime, soft music, or snuggles)
📱 Power down screens at least 1 hour before bed
🌙 Create a cozy sleep space—cool, quiet, and dark

Sweet dreams, little ones! 🌟

Check out this video on the recent announcement relating autism to Tylenol use during pregnancy. Please reach out if you have questions about medical studies; we would love to help you interpret what they mean. Medical doctors are trained to be able evaluate the validity of studies and whether the results show a correlation or causation. We'll do a post in the next few days discussing this topic!

🦠 Norovirus is making its rounds!
It’s one of the most common tummy bugs in kids (and adults too), and while it usually passes on its own, it can spread very quickly.

👉 Tips to help prevent it:
✔️ Wash hands often with soap and water (especially after bathroom trips & before meals).
✔️ Clean and disinfect surfaces that get touched a lot.
✔️ Wash fruits and veggies before eating.
✔️ Keep your little one home if they’re sick to help stop the spread.

💡 When to call your pediatrician:
If your child has trouble keeping fluids down, shows signs of dehydration (like very little urine, dry mouth, no tears when crying), or if symptoms are lasting more than a couple of days.

Healthy habits go a long way in keeping those germs at bay! 🌟💧

Our last post discussed what to look for in a Children's Multivitamin... and we understand how overwhelming it can be!

Here is a list of some vitamins we've found that have good safety and efficacy (they have great 3rd party testing), have appropriate quantities of vitamins and mineral, are lower in sugar (if gummies or chewables) and have great parent reviews. Please know this is not a comprehensive list and we are not receiving any compensation from any companies. We understand there are so many choices parents have to make that we did some of the research for you!

Great Choices for Growing Kids
Here are some trusted options parents love:

SmartyPants Kids Multi or Kids Multi & Omega
Packed with key vitamins plus Omega-3s for brain health, SmartyPants makes gummies kids actually ask for (yes, you’ll need to remind them they’re not candy). *Just saw these at Costco, btw!* These contain 5 grams of sugar per serving.

EllaOlla Powders
Perfect for the smoothie-loving kid, these powders mix easily into drinks or yogurt. They’re a great way to get vitamins into children who don’t love gummies or chewables. *They even have a toddler version for kiddos 1-3 years old*. These don't contain any sugar.

Nordic Naturals Kids Multi
Known for their high-quality fish oil, Nordic Naturals also makes a solid multivitamin that’s gentle on tummies and formulated with clean, thoughtfully sourced ingredients. There are a few formulations: one is sweetened with Reb M (fermented sugar cane) so is zero sugar or there is a berry one that has 6 grams of sugar (higher than we'd recommend).

Garden of Life Kids Gummy Vitamins
Organic, non-GMO, and made with real fruit these gummies are a hit with parents who want the cleanest option possible. Plus, they taste great (and you won’t find any artificial junk inside). These contain 3 grams of sugar and are available at Fry's.

Please note : these are general recommendations. Please do your own research and/or talk to your child's physician to make sure the vitamin you select is correct for them.

The Lowdown on Kids’ multivitamins:

When a Multivitamin Might Be Helpful:
In a perfect world, our kids would eat colorful plates full of veggies, lean proteins, and whole grains. But reality? Many parents are thrilled if their child eats anything that isn’t shaped like a chicken nugget. A quality kid's multivitamin can help ensure they’re getting essential vitamins and minerals for growth, immunity, and overall well-being - especially during busy school days or picky eating phases.

Check the label — Look for vitamins that avoid artificial colors, flavors, and sweeteners (a lot of gummy vitamins can be VERY high in sugar). Make sure the RDA is not exceeded, especially for minerals or vitamins A, D, E or K unless recommended by your child’s pediatrician.

Check for safety and efficacy – Organizations like Consumer Lab, US Pharmacopeia and NSF International offer unbiased supplement evaluations to check for purity, potency and safety. Clean Label certification has stricter testing for heavy metals and pesticides.

Think about form — Gummies, powders, and chewables all work — it’s just a matter of what your child will actually take consistently. Children under 4 shouldn’t take gummies because of choking risk.

Talk to your pediatrician — Especially if your child has allergies, dietary restrictions, or a health condition.

Bottom Line:
Multivitamins aren’t a replacement for a healthy diet, but they can be a helpful safety net for growing kids. Whether your child prefers a gummy, a powder, or something in between, today’s options make it easy to find one they’ll enjoy — and that you’ll feel good about giving them.

It's almost time to go back to school! You're probably stressed about all the supplies and clothes. Now is also the time to start prepping to make sure your kiddos keep that perfect attendance by making sure their immune system is ready. All those friends they're excited to see have likely been traveling, picking up all kinds of exotic goodies that can mean missed classroom time. It's important to make sure your returning student is getting all those key nutrients to help them fight off any bugs they encounter. Some natural sources include:
-Bananas for vitamin B
-Citrus for vitamin C
-Go nuts for zinc(almonds, cashews, peanuts)
-Yogurt for gut health
-Fish for protein, Omega 3s, vit A and D
-Leafy greens for vit A and K

Also, remember to get all your recommended vaccines to stay protected!

And if ALL that doesn't work remember that Periscope is here to help with sick and well visits, sports physicals and any other way we can!

It’s pool season! This is the time of year we are all having get togethers and friends staying over, which leads to more people in the water than usual. There are a few simple things we need to keep in mind to keep everyone safe.

Lets start with an easy one - swimsuit color. Anything with contrasting color (think neon pink, orange, yellow) will be more visible in the water than a blue or light green swimsuit. When there are floats, toys, and people, you want your child visable.

If you’re having get-togethers(Fourth of July is right around the corner!) make sure you have a life guard or designate a responsible adult to watch the pool in shifts to look after your littles. Drownings can happen in seconds even when there are multiple people in and around the pool.

Two simple steps to help keep everyone safe and having fun!

For all our parents out there who have kiddo that struggles with ADHD. Research shows children with ADHD are 3-5 years behind their peers in executive function skills (time management, organization, task compensation, emotional regulation, etc.). The best way to help them is to work on building those skills.

Counselor Amber: Great guidance on active listening with your children (the counselor's secret 😉😂).
There are a lot of ways to say it: connection before correction, seek first to understand then to be understood, to be respected you must first show respect... All of these still involve correction and guidance but the goal is to build the relationship and trust so you can provide guidance ❤️.
