May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month. 🧡 While we love the sun, it’s crucial to remember that skin cancer is the most common cancer in the US, and early detection is absolutely key.
Melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer, does not discriminate and affects both white and Black people. Many people are unaware that while overall incidence is lower in populations with darker skin tones, the outcomes can be much worse due to delayed diagnosis and lower awareness of warning signs on diverse skin.
In fact, music icon Bob Marley tragically died of melanoma at age 36. His cancer started on the bottom of his foot, an area often overlooked. This is particularly relevant as melanoma often appears in “acral” regions in people of color—meaning the soles of the feet, the palms of the hands, or under the fingernails and toenails. No matter your skin color, checking your entire body is essential.
The best way to protect yourself (besides wearing SPF!) is to get to know your own skin. Remember the simple ABCDE guide:
Asymmetry
Border
Color
Diameter
Evolving
Please remember: this guide is for educational purposes only. If you notice any changing or suspicious spots, or if a mole looks like an “ugly duckling” (different from all your other spots), schedule an appointment with a dermatologist right away.
