Coughing, choking, labored breathing, and swelling of the throat all point to respiratory distress in your pet. It could mean viral or bacterial lung infections, allergic reaction to insect bites, sensitivity to medicine or vaccines, heart failure, or even cancer.

Emergency Tips for You and Your Pet!

If your pet is ever injured and unable to walk, transporting them to the emergency vet can be a challenge. Here are some tips if you need to urgently and carefully move your pet to get them medical attention:

🚑 Towels, blankets, bedsheets, or pet beds can double as a pet stretcher to carry and lift your pet into the car carefully.

🚑 If you live alone and have a large dog breed, you could invest in a wheeled pet stretcher or wagon to have on hand just in case.

🚑 Injured animals are more likely to bite or claw out of fear or pain, so be careful when moving your pet. For dogs, you may need to use a temporary muzzle to prevent a bite injury. For cats, it is best to approach them from behind and wrap them in a thick towel or blanket to protect yourself from biting or scratching.

🚑 Handle the injured animal as little as possible to prevent further injury to the pet or yourself.

🚑 If you can, call the emergency vet to alert them you are on the way so they can prepare for your arrival.

Congratulations to Elsa - our Employee of the Month!

I have been in the field for over 10 years. I have 5 dogs and 1 cat.
I have 3 jobs. When I am not working, I like to hang out at home with my pets and shop online.
I started working at AVECCC the end of January. I have really enjoyed working with both teams, they are both great and amazing!
You can see the passion that each and every one of them has to help each patient.

🐾 Today is National Take Your Cat to the Vet Day! 🐾 Regular examinations are an important way to keep our feline friends healthy and thriving.

These sweet kittens were rescued by Peoria Animal Control officers (featured in some older but amazing photos) in 116° temperatures and received the care and love they need from our team. A reminder that every cat deserves a chance at a healthy life - and that starts with routine veterinary visits.

Meet Junebug (and her kittens!) - our Patient of the Month!🐾

Starting out as a stray cat on the mountain 🌄 Miss June Bug trusted human hands to help raise her new litter of kittens. Bringing them to her new found mom one by one over the course of 12 hours, Miss June Bug was pleased to have a safe place to lie and rest with her kittens. We first saw Miss June Bug for anorexia and nausea. Hoping some anti-nausea medication would do the trick, her owner took her home to continue caring for her babies. Unfortunately, we saw her again 2 weeks later, at the end of her nursing the kittens, with increased pain and GI symptoms. Miss June Bug stayed in the hospital for 12 hours on pain medication and IV fluids. She was being hand-fed chicken and given plenty of cuddles by the doctors and staff and was able to go home the same day. Her x-rays and bloodwork results all came back within normal limits. Her owner did a wonderful job caring for the kittens at home in Miss June Bug's absence. 🐈 Today June Bug is eating well and gaining weight. All 5 of her kittens are healthy and working on finding their forever homes as well. All of us at AVECCC Buckeye are grateful to of had the opportunity to meet this little family and support Miss June Bug. It is true, it does take a village to raise and baby, or kittens alike.

Here's a little bit more about her:
-She just moved here from the Pacific Northwest 5 months ago, grew up in Spokane, Washington
-She's enjoying the warm weather for first time ever in her life and had been enduring cold, long winters in Canada for the last 10 years
-She's enjoying her AVECCC family keeping her on her toes with their strong personalities, their top-notch medicine, and dedication to patient care
-She is looking forward to exploring all the places to adventure around the area and wants to do some hiking, horseback riding, and kayaking

Meet Willow - our Patient of the Month! 🐾

Willow presented to AVECCC Buckeye for acute strangulation as a result of playtime with her best friend (and sister) gone wrong. Willow's sister, Daisy (the doodle), accidentally got Willow's collar caught in her mouth which caused Willow's injuries. After a day of hospitalization and diagnostics to ensure Willow didn't have any other underlying concerns, she was discharged back to her family and her owner reports that she is doing phenomenal at home and can't thank us enough for our care and compassion. We loved caring for the sweet girl! 🐕
