Yesterday, one of my largest suppliers of Chinese herbal medicines and other products let me know that prices will be increasing by about 35% across the board.

This is the result of the large tariffs slapped on Chinese goods by the Trump administration. As anyone who understands tariffs knows, the costs of a tariff are not paid by the foreign company but by the U.S. consumer.

My margins are already razor-thin, and I cannot absorb a 35% cost increase and remain profitable. Thus, prices at my dispensary or over the counter at my office, will be rising.

Similarly, the cost of needles, moxa and other products used during the acupuncture treatment itself will be increasing as well. Over the next few weeks I will be examining their impact, and I will increase fees as little as possible to cover the increased costs.

ONE THING

People who suffer from chronic disease, or who are neurodivergent, or who for any one of a million other reasons cannot fit into an inconvenient box labeled "normal," are at higher risk of despair and depression.

I had one patient recently tell me how horrible it was trying to do all the things every day, and how it had sent her spiraling into the deeps.

I told her to forget about all the things, and just do one thing every day. It doesn't have to be the most important thing, or even a big thing. It can be brushing your teeth. Or folding your laundry. Pick something within your current realm of possibility, and do that one thing.

If you contain your aspirations to just accomplishing one thing, you will discover that you get that little rush of happy chemicals after you do it.

But be careful -- don't start stacking your One Things. Maybe tomorrow do a different thing, but don't feel like since you did one thing yesterday that today you can do two. Maybe you can. Maybe you can't. Don't worry about it. Some days you might be able to do two. Or three. But don't reserve your self-congratulations for doing those extra things. Give yourself all the credit you should have for doing that One Thing.

Things will change over time, for better or for worse. But make your One Thing every day a constant. It will make every day a successful one, no matter what else happens.
