Greenwoods provides access to high-quality and affordable mental healthcare.

Greenwoods is a nonprofit organization that helps people find quality mental health care. Greenwoods currently has 3 areas of focus:

Mental Health Assessments & Referrals: Greenwoods offers mental health assessments, at no charge for qualifying clients, to anyone who lives or works in Litchfield County. Following the assessment, the client is matched with a clinician either in our network of 130 private practice providers or one of our in-house clinicians, whoever best meets the needs of the client. Youth Mental Health Program: Greenwoods has partnered with 2 local schools to start a school-based mental health program. We provide services in the school, which allows access to treatment for students who would otherwise go without care. Additionally, Greenwoods has partnered with several other public schools to bring our model of assessment and referral to students. Community Outreach & Recovery Navigation: Our Community Outreach & Recovery Navigators travel the county informing people of the work we do and helping individuals access the most appropriate treatment for their unique situations. Through this program, individuals and families gain access to high quality mental health and addiction treatment.

Who We Are

Our Mission

The mission of Greenwoods Counseling Referrals, Inc. is to provide access to high-quality and affordable mental healthcare and related social services for individuals and families living or working in Litchfield County.

Our History

Greenwoods was founded in 1992 by the Rev. W. David Dobbins Jr., a Litchfield County Episcopal minister. Trained as a counselor, the Rev. Dobbins saw how difficult it was for people in crisis to find their way to the right help. In response, he built a carefully screened network of doctors, therapists, psychiatrists, psychologists and other healthcare professionals willing to see clients regardless of their ability to pay.

Many of those seeking professional referrals from Greenwoods ask for, and receive, financial help. Others do not need financial help, but seek us out for professional referrals only.

Over the years the Greenwoods network has expanded to include a wide variety of clinicians, clinics, and social service providers. We still have our program offices where Dr. Dobbins began in St. Michael’s Church at 25 South Street in Litchfield, CT (although we are nonsectarian).

Why It Matters

Greenwoods began as a small grass-roots agency, and we will always retain our personal, intimate approach to our services and programs. Providing access to excellent care is central to our mission, a service that is badly needed. Lack of access to quality behavioral health and social services is a well-established and appalling fact.

People face a variety of obstacles that reduce their access to quality behavioral healthcare. Only half of those who need help actually get it. A January 2013 study by the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration concluded that many people (50%) don’t get help because they can’t afford it or their insurance won’t cover it; they don’t think they need it (39%); or they are afraid that friends, family members, neighbors and employers will have a negative attitude about them if they seek treatment (35%). Poor access also may stem from the helplessness family members and friends feel because they simply don’t know how or where to get help for a troubled loved one. Finding appropriate care is even more problematic in a rural area like Litchfield County, where mental health services are often spread out geographically and hard to access. Greenwoods maintains a robust network of mental health professionals and resources in the community. Having this network of professionals and resources allows us to quickly connect people in need with the services that can help. This type of service is truly unique. There is nothing else like Greenwoods in Connecticut, and possible the country.
