What is direct primary care?

Direct primary care (DPC) is a healthcare payment model that allows patients to pay their primary care provider a monthly or annual fee in exchange for direct access to a range of primary care services. This model eliminates the need for insurance providers and health insurance claims, and patients don't pay copays or deductibles. DPC practices can offer enhanced services over traditional fee-for-service medicine, such as:
- Extended visits
- Home-based medical visits
- Real-time access to their physician via technology
- Coordinated care administration

DPC practices are motivated to keep patients healthy and happy, so they often have many open schedule slots, which can lead to same-day appointments and little to no wait times. They also aren't rewarded for unnecessary procedures, so they can give more time to each visit. For example, simple visits might be 30 minutes long, while new patients might receive 60 minutes or more.

While DPC practices don't accept insurance, most people who use DPC are also enrolled in a high-deductible health plan.

Skin checks – who needs one?

For our younger kids, they only need one if they have a mole or skin lesion that is changing size, shape, color or height. In our littlest ones in that first one to two years of life, it is normal for their freckles and moles to just start appearing. If a new one appears during that time, it is most likely nothing to be concerned about. But always check with your pediatrician to be sure. And our older kids, especially those with a light skin, light eyes, light hair, and this incredibly intense Florida sun, getting the skin checked by the pediatrician every year is incredibly important. If the pediatrician finds something that is worthy of being looked at by a dermatologist, definitely go, and definitely follow the dermatology guidelines as far as when to come back to be rechecked. If you are a grown-up, or an older teen, or you have already seen a dermatologist and they tell you to come back – go to your dermatologist every single year or more if they tell you! Skin checks are of utmost importance, because skin cancer is definitely something we can remove very easily, but can also turn very bad if we do not catch it early. There is no reason to not catch it early. So please - Go. Get. Your. Skin. Checked!
