Can walking help protect your brain as you age?
New research suggests it might. A recent study found that older adults who walked more each day had slower cognitive decline, especially those already at higher risk for Alzheimer’s disease.
Here’s the encouraging part:
You do not need to hit 10,000 steps a day.
The biggest benefits were seen around 5,000 to 7,500 steps per day — a much more realistic goal for many people.
Compared to those getting fewer than 3,000 steps daily, people in that moderate activity range showed 40% to 54% slower cognitive decline over time.
That means something as simple as a daily walk may help support:
✔ Brain health
✔ Memory
✔ Long-term function
✔ Healthy aging
The key is to start small and stay consistent. A little more movement each day can add up in a big way over time.
How many steps are you averaging each day right now?
In cognitively normal older adults at risk for Alzheimer’s dementia, physical inactivity was associated with faster tau protein buildup and cognitive decline.
