*In Loving Memory of Diego Andrés Rangel Vetencourt*
_May 11, 2005 - May 19, 2025_
Diego Andrés Rangel Vetencourt was a bright light in this world - a gentle soul who defied all odds. Born with severe medical challenges, doctors once told his mother, Daniella (Dany) Vetencourt, that he wouldn’t live past infancy. But Diego had other plans. With unwavering love, strength, and support from his devoted mother, family, and countless healthcare heroes, Diego lived a joyful, meaningful 20 years filled with laughter, music, and love.
Despite living with a rare mitochondrial disease caused by a VARS2 gene mutation - a condition that brought developmental delays, seizures, heart complications, and countless hospital visits - Diego thrived in his own extraordinary way. He graduated school, spoke both English and Spanish, and was known for his kind smile, infectious laugh, and deep emotional intelligence. He loved swimming, riding horses, singing, Pixar’s movie Cars, reading stories, and being a loving big brother to Matías.
Diego’s resilience and warmth made him unforgettable to everyone he met. He was empathetic, funny, and always radiated joy.
One of the deepest bonds in Diego’s life was with his grandmother, Mariela - affectionately called “Yaya”. She was a constant source of love and care, especially during the most difficult times. Even after she passed away from cancer, Diego spoke of her often. There is comfort in knowing that now, they are together again - two souls reunited, watching over the family they loved so deeply.
Diego’s passing in May 2025, just days after his 20th birthday, followed a long and painful medical journey marked by courage and grace. In his final hours, he was surrounded by those who loved him most - a peaceful goodbye for a life that taught so many how to live with love, compassion, and hope.
Now, it’s our turn to support the person who gave Diego this wonderful life: Dany.
Daniella has been a model of resilience. A breast cancer survivor and caregiver, Dany has always put others first. Through years of struggle and loss, she has remained strong, loving, and selfless. It’s time for her to be held by the same community she’s given so much to.
*Operation Lotus is raising funds to allow Dany the space and time to grieve without the immediate burden of financial stress.* No mother should have to worry about bills while mourning her child. Every contribution will help lift a weight from her shoulders and remind her that she is not alone.
